"As the number of people killed on Australian roads continues to rise at an alarming pace, authorities across the country are trialling new methods they hope will reduce accidents and increase safety. In NSW, average speed cameras have been trialled to monitor the speed of heavy vehicles. These cameras calculate a vehicle’s average speed over a monitored road section rather than capturing speed at a single point. The system works by recording a vehicle’s entry and exit times at two points, then calculating whether the average speed exceeds the limit. If it does, drivers receive fines and demerit points. While the scheme currently only targets heavy vehicles, it was announced last year that in 2025 the trial will expand to include all vehicles. Though no solid date was revealed at the time, the state government said it'll likely commence in "mid-2025". This week, a Transport for NSW (TfNSW) spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia the program is still on the radar, but an "exact date" is still being finalised. In October, NSW Minister for Roads John Graham said the technology has been "found to be effective" in other states — and in the UK, Norway, Italy and the Netherlands. "This is the right time to investigate whether lives can be saved by the use of average speed cameras for all vehicles, not only trucks," he told media. "It is our responsibility to properly evaluate whether they are effective in preventing another family and another friendship circle from being devastated — which is the sad result every time someone dies on NSW roads." more..... Won't worry me - I cruise control at the posted limit ... you'd have to be going pretty flat chat to not make the grade given road and traffic conditions generally. |

Got a 60 zone here that makes 30 sometimes and 40 at others... if they put in a 50 sign you'd need to point a gun at them to make them go faster. |

Mount Victoria in NSW has had these average speed cameras for a few years.
It's steep downhill with 60 kph limit even in low gear you still need to ride brakes all the way down. It's revenue raising motorists are a cash cow for governments who need extra money to make up for all the taxpayers money they piss away like drunken sailors. |

More police cars travelling up and down the roads has been proven, time and time again to deter speeding, but speeding fines fill the Government coffers, so nothing positive will be done about it.
G The NSW Government collected. . ‘’ Data from Revenue NSW2 indicates that there were over 1.4 million speeding offences between July 2021 and June 2022, bringing in more than $ 291 million to the NSW Government. This is an increase of around 40% on the same time, the previous year.’’ Now if being a bit over the limit is as dangerous as the Government would have us believe then the road toll should be horrendous. Many speed ilmits are rubbish. There is a street in Inverell, NSW, a residential street, where the speed limit is 70 kph because it is a bypass for heavy vehicles. The New England Highway between Glen Innes and Armidale has at least two blind corners with included crests and the road markings are an interruped centre line and no signs, and it’s been that way for years because the Government doesn’t care two hoots about road accidents all it’s interested in is themoney it can extract from the motorists |

I can at least say I chased a cop car doing 150kmphr and eventually managed to pull him over. I asked him a few questions before he went on his way. Just one of those moments in life. :)

The Government does do some things for road safety.
A road that I frequently travel has signs that say “WILD ANIMALS NEXT 2.5 KILOMETRES “ These would help if the ‘roos etc could read, however they can’t and keep getting killed outside the designated area. |

Scomo is on record as saying the Gold Coast is a thirty minute city! His right! That’s how long it takes to find somewhere to park after being stuck in traffic for a hour to travel 20 k |

And just remember the cameras [A] don’t stop the speedsters they record the event to collect money and by the time that the letter is sent, the speedster and a few of his victims may be dead, whereas a police car[B] on the road could have deterred the speeding in the first place.
But A = $ collected and B = $ spent. Which one has Government favour? |

Back in my days of driving vintage English sports cars we used to pass the then modern cars [1960s],going down Mt. Victoria, stay in 3rd gear and use the driving brake [hand brake] saving the 4 wheel foot brake for its intended emergency use
I once drove from Lidcombe to Bathurst at an average speed of 67.2 mph, that’s just over 108 kph, in a 1926 Alvis Super Sports, and I observed all the posted speed limits, except the maximum of 50mph, over that was not illegal but the onus of proof of safe driving was on the driver. In other words one could be charged, but competence could be used to prove that it was a safe speed. |

Speed cameras will do what speed cameras do - raise money while having no impact on anything else. They often make an area more dangerous to drive not less.

They certainly can be cranky, I once wrapped a bandage around the arm of a bloke that was annoying one of them. They have great claws and he had 6 inch gashes, wrapped him up and sent him straight to hospital. As an aside, never clean such wounds, wrap a rough bandage around using any reasonably clean cloth and let the experts do the clean up. Hospitals appreciate this as no matter how clean the wounds are on arrival the hospital will have to clean them anyway. |

But they don’t stop speeding they only record the fact and they are often situated at the foot of hills where it is easy to inadvertently exceed the limit. Never seen one yet on a long straight road. If Governments were really concerned about road safety there would be positive camber on roundabouts and so many roundabouts would not have vision obstructing vegetation on them. |

Not to worry you haven't damaged your record of being incorrect 99% of the time. Haven't had a ticket in 40 years. Fact is that speed cameras are more likely to cause an accident than to prevent one. |

There’s talk of dropping the speed from 50 Kph to 30 Kph in built up burbs.
I mean there should be more programmes to teach kids about road safety rules. In my day, there were no zebra crossings or lollipop folk…. We had a jingle “look right, look left, look right again, then walk straight across the road, don’t run” Recently I received my licence renewal, there was a discount because of good driving with no fines in a certain amount of years. Well that was a nice surprise. |

After I do my rego every year I check to make sure - know more than one person who did it automatically and was caught out - happened to me once - paid the bills etc, then drove for three months without knowing it hadn't gone through. Just a wee glitch they said - system changeover.. |
