PM proposes debate next Sunday

http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/PM-proposes-debate-next-Sunday/2007/10/14/1192300597855.html

Prime Minister John Howard wants to debate Labor leader Kevin Rudd just one week into the election campaign.

He is proposing the live audience debate take place in the Great Hall of Parliament House next Sunday, moderated by Sky News' political editor David Speers.

http://news.brisbanetimes.com.au/pm-rejects-debate-proposal-is-desperate/20073615-14bk.html

Prime Minister John Howard has rejected a suggestion that desperation has driven him to chase Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd for a debate.

Mr Howard on Sunday night challenged Mr Rudd to the first leaders' debate this Sunday at the Great Hall at Parliament House.

Mr Rudd had previously called on the prime minister to take part in three debates during the election campaign.

It's interesting that JWH chose to have it moderated by Sky News. One assumes that it will then be broadcast live only on Pay TV with Free-to-air TV showing excepts only. Also, I understand that there won't be any live questions from the audience, and he rejects the "worm". Why? What is he afraid of?

I think KR's idea of three debates on Free and Pay TV and the internet with audience interaction and questions is a much better idea. Especially having the last debate on the Sunday before polling day. By then the voters should be better informed with the policies of both parties to provide intelligent questions. This is a better way to debate policies.

A better way to debate politics is to be informed of policies. You are obviously in the opposite camp of popular opinion rather than informed debate.

The worm represents all that is wrong with politics because performance of the head of state matters little to the way policy is formed or the way this countries important decisions are made. But I wouldn't expect that would matter to you

...and the internet with audience interaction and questions is a much better idea.

You have got to be joking? You only have to look at the quality of your questions to see that I wouldn't want to waste the PM's nor the PM's in waiting time in response to your lacklustre drivel that could be found doing a basic google or wiki search.

Political Animal has little moderation. It is the forum for free speech and free thinkers to converse passionately without the threat of being banned. It is a forum for adults.

Lol. On contrary, I agree with you regarding the worm. The worm showed that Latham won the last election debate and look what happened to him. He would've been a semi-competent (if that) PM anyway if he had won. I am merely commenting on why JWH didn't want it? He never clarified.

Also on the contrary, I never believe popular opinion on face value. I rather research the issues or if I don't know I won't comment until I know more. Sure, research results are subjective and sometimes we take only what we want to hear but hey, we are after all animals of bias. Its a matter of being true to yourself and finding a balance in opinion. I have been swayed by good arguments in the past and no doubt I will again. However, dismissing someones opinion as either left or right wing, socialist or fascist, or name calling and personal insults do not to sway me. Mind you, I'm not talking about you... I'm just commenting that that is some people's style of debate.

OK, pardon my lack of punctuations... there should be a comma after "internet". And I wouldn't want to submit anyone to the trolls and flamers in the internet particularly our PM or PM-in-waiting. Afterall, we want them sane in order to run the country. Of course, any internet based debate and questions would have to moderated - it goes without saying. I was thinking more along the lines of question time from live studio audiences after the debate (not on the internet).

Cheers!

PM 'is running from debates', not Labor

What do you mean by performance? The head of state sets the direction.

You only have to look at the quality of your questions

Obviously they wouldn't answer every single question. Either the moderator of the pollies themselves would select them.

Prime Minister John Howard - and not the opposition - is running away from the election campaign debates, Labor's campaign spokeswoman Penny Wong says.

Labor leader Kevin Rudd and Mr Howard are at odds over the timing of the debates.

Mr Rudd wants three debates during the campaign and is refusing to commit to a debate this Sunday without a response from the prime minister to his proposal.

Mr Howard says he will be in Parliament House's Great Hall at 7.30pm (AEST) on Sunday, even if he is doing all the talking himself.

Turnbull, Garrett to face off in debate

http://www.smh.com.au/news/breaking-news/turnbull-garrett-to-face-off-in-debate/2007/11/07/1194329309940.html

The battle for the green vote steps up, with Federal Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull going head to head in a debate with his Labor counterpart Peter Garrett.

Mr Turnbull and Mr Garrett, both of whom have run into controversy in their portfolios during the campaign, will battle it out in the fifth election debate hosted by the National Press Club.

http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/Garrett-beats-Turnbull-on-climate-poll/2007/11/08/1194329371702.html

Voters in marginal seats believe Labor environment spokesman Peter Garrett - despite his election campaign gaffes - is more serious about tackling global warming than his coalition opponents, a new survey finds.

The survey also found three-quarters of those polled backed a position on a new global carbon-emissions treaty that Mr Garrett was forced to abandon last week.

The survey, commissioned by the Climate Institute, found 43 per cent of the voters thought Mr Garrett "very serious" about climate change, compared with only seven per cent for federal Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Twenty-eight per cent thought the same of Labor leader Kevin Rudd, 11 per cent of Prime Minister John Howard and six per cent of federal Treasurer Peter Costello.

Seventy-five per cent thought Australia should commit to greenhouse pollution targets rather than wait for the developing world to act - a position Mr Garrett initially endorsed last week.

Later, his stance changed to requiring commitments from developing countries, prompting Mr Howard to call it the biggest capitulation of the campaign.

Only 22 per cent of those polled believed Australia should wait for China and India to sign up to a post-2012 deal while 61 per cent thought Australia should ratify the Kyoto Protocol and 13 per cent opposed the move.

John closes the gap

it'll be close

"John Howard closes the gap in election race   By Darrell Giles
November 17, 2007 11:00pm

FORGET all the pre-election hype of a Labor landslide - the 2007 federal election next Saturday will be a very tight contest, according to an exclusive Sunday Mail poll.

While Labor is narrowly the party of choice and its leader Kevin Rudd the preferred prime minister, the Coalition Government has closed the gap. Queensland, without doubt, will be the key battleground.

The Sunday Mail/Galaxy Research survey last week of 4000 voters across the nation - including 800 in Queensland - gives the ALP a narrow two-point lead in the Sunshine State.

It was a similar picture in early October, in the week before Mr Howard called an election and kicked off the long-winded six-week campaign.

Labor appears to have made little headway despite a strong campaign by Mr Rudd. In Queensland, it looks set to pick up only Bonner and Moreton - well short of the six to eight seats ALP strategists had targeted as "must wins".

The ALP needs to snatch 16 seats across Australia to take power from the Coalition.

The poll surveyed 800 voters in the marginal Liberal-held Queensland seats of Bonner (0.5 per cent), Moreton (2.8 per cent), Herbert (6.2 per cent) and Longman (6.7 per cent).

Both parties scored 44 per cent of the primary vote, with Labor dropping 1 per cent from the Galaxy poll a month ago.

On a two-party preferred basis, Labor led 51-49.

Mr Rudd's popularity remained high, but it slipped from the enormous 16-point lead he enjoyed last month. Latest polling had him ahead of Mr Howard in the preferred-PM stakes by 50-43."

The gutsy John Howard

The latest survey shows he is behind the poll in his own seat, Bennalong..

It is a marginal seat, that's what happens in marginal seats.
Why did he not give himself a safe seat, a Party leaders normally do ?

He does not run from a fight. Even when it is looking bad. He stays the course.

Like him or not, you have to admire him.

I am sorry, but I have no admiration for this man at all. I can acknowledge the few good things he has done but I loathe other things his government and he have done,  and to to such an extent I could not admire him as a human being.
