Aushole - from my knowledge and readings of the koran, hilalis comments are absolutely in line with what is recommended by the koran.

Hard to dump him, when he is right.

Don't bag me for me stance, read bits of the koran yourself, form your own opinion.
See what is happening worldwide.

I can give quotes if you wish. Better to convince yourself though.

Only God can ask me to quit: Mufti

Only God can ask controversial Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali to step down as Australia's mufti, the cleric says.

State and federal politicians have called for Sheik Alhilali to step down as mufti over controversial comments he has made over the past six months.

Earlier this month, the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) - which suspended the sheik's salary last year after he likened scantily-clad women to uncovered meat - said his future would be decided by the National Council of Imams by June.

But Sheik Alhilali, who returned to Australia from the Middle East on Saturday, said he respected the council but would not necessarily comply with a vote to remove him as mufti.

"I only answer to God," Sheik Alhilali told SBS television.

Sheik Alhilali also told reporters at Sydney Airport on Saturday he would defend his innocence in response to allegations he handed over charity donations for victims of last year's war in Lebanon to Hassan Nasrallah, from the radical Hezbollah group.

The allegations have sparked an ongoing investigation by the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

Alhilali a political victim: supporters

http://www.smh.com.au/news/breaking-news/alhilali-a-political-victim-supporters/2007/06/11/1181414199054.html

Controversial cleric Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali stepped aside from Australia's top Islamic post because of constant government pressure, supporters claim.

The former mufti's spokesman, Keysar Trad, said Prime Minister John Howard and Foreign Minister Alexander Downer had been telling the Muslim community for six months to find a new mufti.

Mr Trad, president of the Islamic Friendship Association of Australia, said there had been veiled threats to withdraw government funding from Muslim communities and some government ministers had threatened not to attend events if the Sheik was there.

He said criticism by media commentators who believed there would be another Cronulla-style riot if Sheik Alhilali was re-elected as mufti was another factor.

"Over the past few years, our political leaders have been far more Machiavellian than they used to be," Mr Trad said.

"They are playing the man and not the ball.

"If something can be misinterpreted or carry ambiguity, they will go for the worst possible spin, so the mufti has decided to step down and let someone else take the pressure."

He said the council of imams also had appeared to bow to pressure because it did not insist that the Sheik continue in his role as mufti.

"Under normal circumstances they would say, `no way' and insist he continue as mufti and not step aside," Mr Trad told AAP.

However, he described the new mufti, Sheik Fehmi El-Imam, as "a very nice man".

"It appears the media likes him and people in the Muslim community like him."

Mr Trad rejected calls for the position of mufti to be abandoned altogether, saying such demands came from people ignorant of the religion.

Outgoing Islamic leader Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali did a bad job and embarrassed Australia's Muslims, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said.

"I have to say I think that Sheik Alhilali has done a very bad job as the leader of the Islamic community," Mr Downer told Sky News.

"I know many Muslims who have been embarrassed by him and have felt he hasn't done Islamic Australia any good at all.

"Him standing down and a new Mufti taking over, it has to be a step forward."

Mr Downer said all religious groups in Australia had a duty to promote tolerance and compassion.

"Their leaders need to preach a message of moderation.

"They need to preach the message that we're all Australians and we have some core Australian values."

New mufti 'fails academic test'

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,21908426-2702,00.html

AUSTRALIA'S new Muslim spiritual leader Fehmi Naji el-Imam has been attacked by fellow clerics for having no more than a "high school" qualification in Islamic studies, failing to meet the main criterion for a mufti.
Sheik Fehmi's inadequate academic grounding has also sparked calls by imams nationwide to review the Lebanese-born cleric's role, less than a week after he replaced Taj Din al-Hilali.

Australian-educated imam Abdul Nasser Shamsin said yesterday senior Muslim leaders were disappointed by Sheik Fehmi's appointment on Sunday but were initially more relieved his outspoken predecessor had been ousted after 18 years as mufti.

Hilali gives material support to terrorists

Hilali can't account for Lebanon aid
Richard Kerbaj
April 02, 2007

MUSLIM cleric Taj Din al-Hilali personally handed out in Beirut tens of thousands of dollars collected at Australian mosques in the aftermath of last year's Israel-Hezbollah war but has failed to properly detail where the money went.
The funds raised by Islamic organisations, including the Lebanese Muslim Association, following the 34-day war were earmarked for the victims of the conflict.
But documents obtained by The Australian reveal that $US10,000 was handed to a supporter of the Iraqi insurgency, Sheik Bilal Shaaban, to go towards his Islamic radio station.

The $70,000 raised by the Australian Muslim community was electronically transferred into the private bank account in Lebanon of an LMA employee - Yihya Safi - before it was withdrawn and handed out by Sheik Hilali and Sheik Safi.

While Sheik Safi provided the Lakemba-based LMA with receipts outlining his donations in Lebanon - including a $US10,000 contribution to a relief fund set up by the family of assassinated Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri - Sheik Hilali has yet to give an official report on how he spent the money.

Attorney-General Philip Ruddock told The Australian he was concerned that funds raised in Australia for overseas relief efforts could end up in the handsof terrorist organisations.

A founding member of the Australian Muslim Doctors Against Violence group, Jamal Rifi, said the community was losing faith in donating money for charity because it was not being properly informed on how funds were being spent.

"The Islamic community ... has lost faith in where our money is being spent," he said. "And people have lost faith in donating money to any organisation."

LMA president Tom Zreika said community members who donated money to his organisation last year were also asking how it was disbursed, with some asking if the Sheik Hilali funds might have ended up in the hands of the proscribed terrorist wing of the Iranian-backed movement Hezbollah or its affiliates.

"There's been allegations (among) a few people in the community that he gave the money to (Hezbollah's leader Hassan) Nasrallah," Mr Zreika said. But Mr Zreika said he was given "verbal assurances" by Sheik Hilali that the money was spent on relief efforts in north Lebanon and not to fund any political or terrorist organisation.

Dr Rifi accused Sheik Hilali of having links to Hezbollah, which also operates political and social wings. "He has the link with Hezbollah, definitely," he said.

Mr Zreika said he had asked Sheik Hilali to account for the donations.

But the cleric, who was given a three-month grace period in his position as mufti last weekend, has yet to provide him with an official "detailed report" - showing all receipts - since his return to Australia in January.

"A report was sought from his office in respect of where the funds went," said Mr Zreika, a Sydney-based lawyer and Liberal Party member.

"He's always constantly said, 'Give me a couple more weeks, I'll give it to you'.

"I'm very disappointed, because I don't want to implicate our organisation with anything shifty or untoward ... and so that's why we've sought that report from him many, many times. What we need is not only the report, but we need statements from the bank as to how the money came in, how it was spent."

After The Australian inquired about the charity funds last week, the LMA was forced to obtain information on how Sheik Hilali spent more than $US38,000.

In documents obtained by The Australian, Sheik Hilali has scribbled his distributions in Arabic on "Rydges Hotel" scrap paper, simply putting dollar figures next to the names of those who received the money.

A $US10,000 donation was made to Sheik Shaaban, head of the Islamic Unity Movement, while amounts of $US5000 or less were made out to other clerics whose names are barely readable.

Sheik Hilali left for Lebanon last November following a controversy that was sparked when The Australian exposed his Ramadan sermon, in which he compared immodestly clad women to "uncovered meat" and joked about the notorious Sydney gang rapes.

The Australian also revealed last October that Sheik Hilali had, in an Arabic radio interview, praised militant jihadists in Iraq and Afghanistan, calling them men of the highest order.

Mr Zreika said the money was transferred to Sheik Safi, who was in Lebanon at the time, because he had "full and complete trust" in how the cleric would handle the funds. But it is understood that Sheik Hilali took charge of handing out the cash upon arriving in Lebanon.

It is believed that one of the most prominent Islamic charity fundraising groups, Bayt al-Zakat in Sydney, refused to send the $130,000 it raised through the LMA.

Bayt al-Zakat chairman Adib Marabani said he refused to go through the LMA because he didn't want "any Dick and Harry" to handle the money.

"We didn't want the money to be distributed here and there, but we wanted the money to be distributed to the affected people there (in Lebanon)," he said.

Dr Rifi said transparency was the responsibility of the organisations and individuals who raised charity funds.

"To restore the trust of the community ... every one of us, individual and organisation, has to be transparent ... and we inform the community where the money has been spent," he said.

As Howard himself said in defense of the wheat for weapons scandal: money is fungible. Even if you hand it out to questionable regimes or organisations there is absolutely no way of proving that the particular dollars you give to those questionable entities are in fact used for questionable ends. Thus it cannot be proved that Hussein used money given to him by the AWB to buy weapons to shoot at Australians, and it cannot be proved that money Hilali has handed out here was or is going to be used to carry out terrorist activities.

Accusing him of supporting terrorism here is wild speculation and pointless hearsay. Get some concrete evidence if you want to make this claim, not some sensationalist drivel. Right here nothing is being made out of nothing, this doesn't even qualify as a storm in a teacup...

"A founding member of the Australian Muslim Doctors Against Violence group, Jamal Rifi,"

that was in the original report.

I have no idea why anyone would want to "shelter" anyone who has made the comments hilali has.
Look at his past, the facts.

he now is "retired" on several hundred dollar per week, and a free house right beside the main mosque !!  he has said he now has "greater issues" to follow.

i saw that, but u still didn't answer my question, what makes this Rifi guy more reliable? i seem to recall from ur previous posts that u think all muslims are liars, so why would this guy Rifi be telling the truth?

or is it that muslims only lie or tell the truth when it suits ur argument?

i think that's it, this article was nothing more than speculation and had no concrete proof that hilali is funding terrorists. like i mentioned above, i really pity the fools that believe everything the news tells them.

Two things... Firstly Hizbollah are a legitimate political movement despite any rhetoric they may espouse, they have seats in Lebanese government. Same can be said for Hamas and the Taliban we are talking about legitimate political movements, however nasty they may be. Secondly, a good many Iraqis support the insurgency movement, to many they are a legitimately fighting for their freedom and a political cause much like any one of us would do if Australia was invaded and occupied. Whether you agree or disagree with that political cause is irrelevant - none of us have the right to dictate anything about the operation of politics in a foreign nation.

Hizbollah and the Iraqi insurgency pose absolutely no threat to Australia through their aims, they are local political movements concerned with local political issues inside their own sovereign nations and neighbouring countries (which is still irrelevant since none of that has any effect or poses any direct threat to our country). There is no crime in handing out money to these sorts of groups, and it cannot be proven that any money given to them is used for illegal activities, as I said, money is fungible, you cannot (generally) trace the source and destination of any particular dollar.

Are you saying that Hillali should not be allowed to donate aid to needy people in other countries because he talks a lot of stuff that you don't like the sound of? Because if you strip the speculation about funding terrorists that is what this boils down to - you have no proof he has done anything wrong. Believe me, if he HAD done anything wrong the government would be all over him.

This is a non-issue.

It's funny how you clowns are so quick to criticize and get speculative of the media when they portray the Islamic community in a negative light, but when they do a 'Multiculturalism is great' or a typical 'Muslims are misunderstood' story, you all stand up and applaud like sheep.

donaldtrump, u have to admit this story was nothing more than speculation. while it looks suss, it's not proof that hilali is funding terrorists.

on the issue of multiculturalism, i mentioned that the only thing we have to go on is online polls (e.g. via ninemsn), why are hardly reliable.
