Keeping Warm
Jun 16th, 2007 at 12:31pm

How do you keep warm in this very cold weather.

Im wondering if its my imagination, but is it colder this winter than previous few?

How do we kickstart our day and get warm.

I put the kettle on the first I wake up and eat. This helps.

Getting active.

Any tips.

Any ice down or up your way..maybe you have snow?

Ugg boots are the most important thing, especially if you don't use a heater and I don't have carpets, like me. I think this last week has been especially cold. The weather front that dumped all that rain on Newcastle is to blame.

I don't have heating or carpets either - so in winter it's the same temperature inside as out.

It's best to move around a lot - otherwise wear 3 sets of clothing, thick socks and as freediver suggested ugg boots.

This winter definitely seems colder than last winter and I'm determined not to get an airconditioner - on principle, although it's very tempting.

A very hot shower is a good way to warm up first thing in the morning.

I suspect a hot shower may actually consume more energy than heating the air, but I'm not sure. One thing I've noticed is that is is colder near my windows, which don't form a decent seal. You can feel a cold breeze coming through the gaps. Also, when the bathroom is steamy, you can see the air currents. The air rapidly accelerates downwards around the window (one of the few that does seal reasonably well) because it is cooled quickly.

Layers also help. A singlet and shirt is just as good as a jacket.

yes mantra and FD,

I do the Uggies and socks. I cuddle my cat a lot..

I drink tea and hot chocolate.

My house is polished floors and only  a couple large rugs.

The heaters do come on at night when the deep chill sets in though. I dont have a fireplace.

Lots of soups and stews and casseroles too.

And we play Uno..the kids always win . Im not good at cards.

But id love to learn poker and drink really expensive liquors / port/ dry martinis and win squillions of dollars to fund my illegal operations..
Great indoor warming activites. Id learn to love cigerellos too. Wink

Yes you are probably right Freediver.  I was thinking that the other day - it's defeating the purpose.

Whatever hot water I waste during winter, I offset it during the summer months.  My winter electricity bill is probably only a few dollars more, if that,  than my summer one - so in my mind I'm doing the right thing.

What is the solution?  Maybe I should invest in an old generator and attach it to an airconditioner.

Oceans - having an animal to cuddle definitely helps.

An old generator would probably be worse than mains electricity also. If you get air con, you might as well run it off the mains and get proper insulation instead.

In a fireplace is good..and yes nothing as great as a wood fire..messy but still good.

My nan used to have the old wood type stove that used to keep her whole house warm. Food in a big pot always on the go.And a kettle of course.

FD..I seal all those nasty draughts when I find them with tape or whatever. In summer it helps with keeping the house cool too.

Beanies are my favourite.
In particular, a 100% woollen one, a 100 % cotton one.
My "Bentley beanieis Alpaca.  aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Is impossible to heat this house. Uninsulated, wooden floors.
A soft curvy woman is ............ a welcome warmer.  Smiley

It must be a good one Sprint.

I love Beanies but the prettiest ones are woefully itchy and they drive me crazy. Fake fur is not itchy though.

Why are the itchy Sprint..is Alpaca comfy to wear?

the alpaca one is the warmest, then the woolly one, then the cotton job.
Very hard to find a nonnylon beanie.
I got the cotton job at Monto, others my g/f knitted.
Is as comfy as braces - excellent

Hot shower in the morning or evening, hot bath, heaters, warm clothes. Socks make a big difference. Wool quilts are very warm. Lots of people die in really cold places without heating. i hope none of you non-heater people are in one of those really cold places. (I am thinking snowy Canada when they lost electricity to large regions, I think last year.)
