The environment debate - my precis
Nov 9th, 2007 at 8:54am

PG - CSIRO said global warming by a few degrees will give us hotter summer days. (honest)
ALp will put LOTS $ into protecting the great barrier reef, manufacturing an aussie green car and clean coal.

Both men spoke passionately about Aussie.

MT - has not recanted any of his principles, unlike PG. Not that that is significant as PG may "change it all if he gets in" anyway.
PG looked quite sick at this reminder.
MT - spoke on federal water policies and named specific farmers and their cases.
Hiliary clinton and bush are disinterested in kyoto. china and india are obliged under kyoto to do nothing.
in a recent 6 month period china accounted for 50% of the worlds increase in emissions.
MT - then fielded a question out of the ball park about same sex couples and their finances. He did it very well.

PG - commented on beautiful whales, how communities are adopting them and whale names.

MT - gave case about kyoto on bluescope steel. They would go overseas, taking the same emissions there and also losing aussie jobs. A lose/lose scenario.

Canada will owe many billions $ under kyoto

During APEC china agreed to be in a future effective international emissions agreement.
Auss under howard will sign to a effective international binding agreement.

In their summation PG was emotional and idealistic
MT was pragmatic, realistic, at the next world meetings every country is out for the best deal, ALP will be seen as a "soft touch". those meetings are tough, you have to be staunch to get anywhere. At best.
ALP did not mention a federal water policy.

My prognosis?
MT will make a great future PM, PG speaks from his heart but without his head engaged

I don't think so.

in a recent 6 month period china accounted for 50% of the worlds increase in emissions

It's funny how people try to put the blame on China, while trying to ignore the fact that China emits far less per person than any industrialised western country, and never will get anywhere near Australia's per capita emissions. Of course China will be responsible for most of the increase if most western countries have capped their emissions. It is the per capita emissions that count, and you won't see Malcolm Turnbull admit to what they are.

During APEC china agreed to be in a future effective international emissions agreement

One without binding targets that would see emissions continue to rise.

Garrett, Turnbull deny compromising

http://www.smh.com.au/news/breaking-news/garrett-turnbull-deny-compromising/2007/11/08/1194329399084.html

Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull says he has never had to compromise his principles in order to pursue his political career.

His opposite number, Labor environment spokesman Peter Garrett, says he accepts the need to be a team player in politics while denying he has betrayed his previously strident left-wing views.

But he accepted the need to toe the party line on key issues on occasions.

Labor ahead under WWF climate standards

http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/Labor-ahead-under-WWF-climate-standards/2007/11/11/1194766516240.html

Labor is well ahead of the coalition on climate change commitments, according to a conservation group's benchmarks.

WWF-Australia's progress report released on Monday finds the coalition has only met one of the group's recommended measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Labor met two out of four climate change benchmarks and partially met the others.

WWF's only endorsement for coalition was that it largely met the group's call to establish an emissions trading scheme by 2010.

Prime Minister John Howard has pledged to set up a national scheme by 2011 or 2012.

The coalition did not meet any of WWF's recommendations for greenhouse targets nor on adopting energy efficiency standards, despite phasing out incandescent light bulbs and extending rebates for solar energy.

Mr Howard's clean energy target of about 15 per cent of power generation by 2020 also fell short of the group's call for a 20 per cent renewable energy target by that year and 30 per cent by 2030.

Labor's 2050 greenhouse target of 60 per cent largely met the WWF's goal, but it was penalised for having no shorter-term goals.

The opposition also met several of the energy efficiency benchmarks, and got a pass mark for emissions trading and its renewable energy target of 20 per cent by 2020.
