I have so many favourites, how could I possibly pick one.

Here are some of my favourite quotes from Jesus Christ...

"I come not to bring peace, but to bring a sword" (Gospel of Matthew 10:34)

"Slaves, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in singleness of heart, fearing the Lord." - Colossians, chapter 3, verse 22

In reference to the old testament...
"Until Heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away from the law, until all is accomplished" (Matthew 5:18).

Old Testament
Punishment for rape of an unmarried person...
"If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father.  Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her." Deuteronomy 22:28-29

Punishment for rape of a married person...
"If within the city a man comes upon a maiden who is betrothed, and has relations with her, you shall bring them both out of the gate of the city and there stone them to death: the girl because she did not cry out for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbors wife." -Deuteronomy 22:23-24

It's certainly an entertaining read.  More sick and twisted than any other horror story I know of.

Do you know what's so strange? I've never met a single Christian who practiced that.  I wonder why?

I interrupt this discussion of Bible verses, with some revelations about Bible myths v's historical realities...

Quote:
Bible

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bible is a collection of texts written by different people. Certain texts were written by historians who tried to show what Ancient Israel was like. Other texts are poems about God. Still others were used to make laws. All texts were written over a period of about 1200 years.

Followers of Judaism and Christianity consider the Bible sacred but they do not all agree about what belongs in the Bible. A number of texts are both in the Hebrew Bible, used by Jews, and the Christian one.

There are many names for the Bible; some call it Holy Scripture, Holy Writ or the Good Book. The Bible was written long ago in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, and translations were made later into Latin and some other languages. Now there are translations in English and many other languages.

When talking about the Bible, a book is used to speak about a number of texts. All the texts that make a book are believed to belong together.

Most of the time, people believe they were written or collected by the same person. Sometimes, all the texts of a book also have a common subject, for example how to punish someone who has done something against the law.

The Bible contains different kinds of such books. Some are history, telling the stories of the Jews, Jesus, or Jesus' followers. Some are collections of wise sayings. Some are God's commands to His people, which He expects them to obey. Some are songs of praise to God. Some are books of prophecy, messages from God that He gave through chosen people called prophets.

What is considered part of the bible changed with history. Different denominations include certain parts or leave out other parts. As the Bible has been translated into modern languages, it is also possible that there are different translations of the same texts.

Today, a complete version of the Bible exists in 429 languages. Parts have been translated in 2429 languages. Most bibles can be found in the British Museum in London.

Old Testament

   Main article: Old Testament

The Bible is a collection of books. The first part is called the Old Testament or Tanakh. It was mostly written in Hebrew; a few parts are written in Aramaic. This part of the Bible is considered to be holy by Jews as well as Christians.

There are a few parts of the Old Testament that can be proven by science. These parts are called Deuterocanonical by those Churches that accept them as part of the Bible, and Apocrypha by those that do not.

New Testament

   Main article: New Testament

The second part is called the New Testament, which is written in Greek and Aramaic. The main part of this book is the story of the life of Jesus Christ. The four different versions of this story in the New Testament are called the Gospels. After the Gospels, there is also the story of what happened after Jesus's death. Part of this is told through letters by early Christian leaders, especially Saint Paul.

One of the most quoted verses in the Bible is John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish [die] but have eternal life." NIV

Views about the Bible

People have different ideas about what the Bible is. Christians believe it is God's Word to people. The Jews believe that only the Old Testament is from God. Protestants and Catholics believe that the Old and New Testaments are God's Word. Catholics also believe that the books called Apocryphal or Deuterocanonical are part of the Bible. Sometimes different church disagree over exactly what the Bible means.

According to Islam, much of the Bible is true, but the Koran is better. Atheists do not believe that God exists, so they do not believe that God could have sent people to the earth (called prophets) to write the Bible.

Quote:
The Bible has 66 different books written by at least 39 authors over a period of 1,500 years.

Wow, that's a lot of different authors spread over a great many lifetimes!

Now, THAT'S one heck of an appealing promise!

One might say that it has the ultimate appeal!?

Actually the first 3 quotes I gave you were from Jesus in the new testament.

The 3rd of those is Jesus telling us that every word of the old testament still counts!

Quote:
In reference to the old testament...
"Until Heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away from the law, until all is accomplished" (Matthew 5:18).

The other two were Jesus condoning violence and Jesus condoning slavery.

I was replying to muso. The quotes from duet. are form the OT, hence for jews only, he asked about those.

1/ no, Jesus does not condone violence. The sword is a phrase for the bible.
Quote:
Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6:17
. Quote:
"Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.

Matthew 26:52

2/ No, paul does not condone slavery. it was common then, he was saying how christian slaves should act.

3/the OT laws exist. they only  apply to jews.

I was actually defending Christians by that remark.  If there is anything that gets up my nose more than a sanctimonious evangelizing  fundamentalist, it's a sanctimonious evangelizing  atheist. You must realise that by now.

That's because Christians don't get their morality from the bible.  They are part of the same changing moral Zeitgeist as everyone else.  Where they claim to take their morality from the bible, they are cherry picking the good bits to match the morality they already had to begin with.

Does that answer your question?
