Another mass UFO sighting

MATT CUNNINGHAM

September 24th, 2008

THREE station workers and three backpackers have been left stunned after witnessing strange lights flying over a remote station in the NT outback.

Ray Aylett, Normie Hooker and Alan "Doc" McIntosh were sitting on their pergola at Muckaty Station with three European backpackers when a bright light appeared.

Mr Aylett, 58, said they were all stunned by the bizarre sighting.

"This strange light was coming straight for us, over the house," he said.

"We all walked outside and were watching it come towards us, then it went straight east and faded out.''

Mr Aylett, who has lived at the station north of Tennant Creek for eight years, said he couldn't believe his eyes as the bright light approached on a Thursday night two weeks ago.

"This thing was strange,'' he said.

"I have never seen anything like it."

"Normie and Doc had never seen anything like it either, and those backpackers, they were in shock."

"I was sitting there watching for a couple of minutes."

"You could see it coming towards us but it wasn't a plane."

"It made no noise - you couldn't hear anything.''

Mr Aylett said there was no way their judgement could have been affected by alcohol.

"Me and Doc had had a couple of beers, but Normie doesn't drink,'' he said.

He said the light returned the next night, this time coming from the other direction.

"One bloke went out with a pair of binoculars and said it just turned and went east,'' he said.

I wish I had the time and date. I could then check which bright satellite this sighting corresponded to. It would have been within an hour and a half of sunset I'd say. Probably the International Space Station. It gets pretty bright.

Fading out in the East, and the fact that it's a bright light without sound -  a dead giveway. The sighting by fishermen is definitely the Space Station. I remember checking that one and writing to the paper. It wasn't a UFO, more an LEOO. Spoils a good story I guess. They didn't publish the explanation.

The truth is out there, but it's more mundane than you want to admit.

Genuine question, do satellites reverse their orbits and approach from the opposite direction the next day? In particular does the ISS do this? Although it still went east.

Date: Thursday night 2 weeks ago from the 24th of September.

They don't actually reverse direction. Typically, it can go from South West to North West or South East to North East.

That would be September 11th and 12th. September 11 was the brightest pass at magnitude -2.4. I don't have the location of Muckaty Station, but I used Katherine as a location. The brightest pass on Sept 12th went directly overhead from 19:38 to 19:42. It faded out 44 degrees above the NE horizon at 19:42 and would have been a very spectacular sight, being as bright as the planet Venus.

For Tennant Creek, It's about 30 degrees elevation on 11th 12th and 13th.

Incidentally, sightings of the ISS of this kind are quite often reported as UFO's. It's interesting to compare the descriptions. Even though it's a bright point of light, it's often described as a pencil shaped object because it's so bright that the light persists as it moves along its orbit.

With orbits that go directly overhead, they often say that it changes direction, because when you're trying to track it with your head looking straight up, it appears to change direction.

The other common thing that's reported is that it changes colour (to red). That happens when it enters the shadow of the earth. If you were on the ISS, you'd be experiencing sunset.

The more convinced the observer is that they are looking at a UFO, the more they see things that back up their belief, especially when those around them are also convinced. It's just how the brain works.
