Catholic School Bans Cancer Vaccine
Sep 26th, 2008 at 2:20pm

Looks like some things never change. Catholics still impeding science and technological advances...will these backwards people ever start living in the 21st Century. Wink

------------------------------------------------------------------------

CAIRO — A British Roman Catholic school has barred its schoolgirls from receiving a cancer vaccine, drawing condemnation from health officials for an "irresponsible" decision that may affect students' lives, The Times reported on Thursday, September 25.
"Governors have taken the decision not to allow the school premises to be used for this program," St Monica’s High School in Bury Borough, Manchester, said in a letter to students' parents.

The school will not take part in a national scheme that offers girls aged 12 and 13 protection against the sexually-transmitted human papilloma virus (HPV), which is linked to cervical cancer.

The vaccine is given in three injections over six months.

"We do not believe that school is the right place for the three injections to be administered," governors at St Monica's said in a letter to the parents of its 1,200 pupils.

The school denied that the ban is linked to moral objections raised previously by one of the governors that immunizing young girls would encourage sexual promiscuity.

Speaking about the pilot scheme last year, school governor Monsignor John Allen claimed pupils were being used as "guinea pigs."

Irresponsible

The school's move was condemned as irresponsible by health officials.

"We are disturbed that the school is not allowing vaccinations on its premises," said Peter Elton, Bury's director of public health.

"We know this will reduce the number of girls who take up the vaccines and will put them at higher risk in later life of contracting cervical cancer."

Medical evidence indicates that vaccinating against HPV, which is responsible for 70 percent of cervical cancers, could save the lives of an estimated 400 women each year in the UK.

Each year, 2,700 cases are diagnosed with HPV across Britain and more than 1,000 women die from the disease.

Elton said that no matter what the motive, the governors' decision remains "unbalanced" and "unjustified".

"They [the governors] recognize it as a very effective vaccine but they have these other concerns and we think they are not justified."

If the catholic objection has to do with discouraging promiscuity, then they have the right to deny the treatment as promiscuity is frowned upon in Christian Faith.

If christians obey Abraham's God, then they will have no issue with promiscuity or cervical cancer and can get the vacination set 6 mths prior to marriage.

If the parents disagree and expect their daughters to persue sex prior to marriage then they can persue the vacination via their GP.

When dealing with religous folks, there religion must be respected irrespective of Secular perspectives. The only exception to this is where the situation is immediately life threatening and the religion is in conflict with the hypocratic oath... such as JW's disinclination towards blood transfusions.

Yeah I don't see a problem with this. What are the risks associated with this vaccine anyway?

They said it's not on moral grounds anyway. Probably is though.

I can't see why it would be on an Islamic website. Are they still trying to deflect the evil done in their name by showing Catholics aren't helping their students by immunising them against a sexual disease? Shouldn't they be encouraging this? I mean, it can discourage them from having sex!

Whatever.

lol...a Christian accusing other religons of practising peodaphilia...now there's the pot calling the kettle black.

Tell me sprint...did your priest ever help you with 'oral' confession. Smiley After all...we all know how your christian priests have a preference to 'oral' with little boys..of course the confession is just a means to an end.

Just because it happens doesn't mean it's sanctioned Lestat.

I guess you are too dumb to realise that.

Perhaps not sanctioned..but by covering it up and denying the victims justice...its almost just as bad.

Point still stands...Chritians are the last people to accuse other religons of practising paedophila. The clergy is full of paedophiles.

So is scouts, the education department, the medical profession, junior sporting groups, and just about everywhere else. They are in a lot of places.

I wouldn't say any of these things are 'full' of pedophiles though.

What's your point?

Oh dear....are you having more trouble reading posts weasel. Look at my post above..I rather clearly state my point.

My point is 'Christians are the last people who can accuse other religons of practising paedophila.'

None of those examples you listed above are religons..are they. Its sad that the very same people who are relied on to give 'spiritual guidance' are the very same people that are 'guiding' young children to their knees.

Christians can accuse anyone of being a pedophile. I'd say Christians deplore such barbaric acts.

I was trying to say that pedophiles are everywhere, and are not exclusive to Christianity.

I guess you aren't smart enough to grasp that simple concept Lestat?

Once again weasel moving the goal posts. Of course paedophiles are everywhere...however in the context of this conversation this is irrelevant.

And considering that you had to ask me what my point was immediately one post after I clearly told you what my point was...indicates that it is in fact you that is not so smart.

Sprint made an accusation...considering that he practises a religon which has thousands of paedophile priests who have abused thousands of boys world wide....he is in no position to be making these statements..and it is amazingly hypocritical that he does so.

Obvouisly your pea sized brains can't follow...so I give up. Shouldn't you be off deleting posts or something.

Lestat I know I'm not smart.

Unlike yourself, however, I don't (falsely) claim to be.

Your point makes no sense. Why should Christians be the last people to be accusing pedophiles?

By your reasoning, Muslims should be the last ones to be accusing others of terrorism.

Viva la Israel and the Zionist Jews!

oh dear...really weasel...I know you just admitted that you are not smart....but fair dinkum, take a moment to actually read what I say before you make yourself look foolish.

I never said Christians should be the last people to be accusing paedophiles.

I said...."Chritians are the last people to accuse other religons of practising paedophila."

Do you understand the difference. I can't believe that I have to explain to you what is crystal clear to anyone with half a brain.

Of course Christians can accuse someon of being a  paedophile..anyone can. However, for a Christian to attack another religon (not another person...just in case you still don't get it) for paedophilia is hypocricy...and a clear case of a pot calling the kettle black. (do you also need me to explain this term to you?)
