what made you become a Muslim?

This is one for the resident Muslims - particularly those who grew up in 'western' cultures and became Muslim later in life. We see a lot of dubious stuff in Islam, and the more benign stuff is just a bunch of rules that seem a bit outdated. So this leads to the obvious question - what was it about Islam that inspired you to join up?

I have been looking forward to a reply to this question.

It would actually be the first question I would asked the individual formally known as Cat Stevens. From my own point of view, this was a man that had a profound but not stupidly-cosmic sense of humanity and brotherhood, a poet-storyteller that produced timeless music.

Then 10 years later he is on TV saying that he would kill Salmin Rushdie if he came upon him, while the fatwa was in effect. I remember watching this and thinking "this guy has really gone backwards".

......I am going off memory as to what he actually said and have tried to find a transcript. I do know my initial surprise at his comments have stuck with me.

Your memory is probably not very reliable then.

"The singer attracted controversy in 1989, during an address to students at London's Kingston University, where he was asked about the fatwa calling for the death of author Salman Rushdie. Newspapers quickly interpreted his response as support for the fatwa, but he released a statement the following day clarifying that he had not been supporting vigilantism, and was merely explaining the legal Islamic punishment for blasphemy."

From a life of depravity, decadence and no direction. To a grounded and moral life which has purpose. If that's backwards, then I'm glad I signed up too.

You believe only through Islam can a person achieve these things.

I believe that's an arrogant load of dog turd.

I would have never called Cat Stevens depraved and decadent with no direction.

This is a guy who wrote some of the more delicate music.

If he married a 7 year old child and shagged her, that'ld be depraved.

So, going to ask the question Abu, or content to deflect ?

In reponse to the thread freediver, I will try to put together a list of some of my reasons, but I'll post some stories of other Aussies in the meantime who've become Muslims and explained a bit about why.

This is a pretty nice, calm and rational explanation for why this brother reverted to Islam.

So you have surfed the net and found out about other people.

To the original question posted you have ignored and diverted, you still have to post anythng about yourself.

Why am I not surprised ?

Well that told us very little about why she became a Muslim.

Perhaps she needed to be Muslim in order to get married?  hmmm.

sprint, as you've been told enough times. I don't participate in this forum according to your directions and requests. If you don't like my posts move along, or you'll be moved.

grendel, the other videos give a lot more of an insight into peoples experiences in becoming Muslim. The 2 part one specifically is probably more of what you're looking for, if you want reasons and descriptions of peoples search for the truth. If however, as I suspect, you just want to criticise everything, then take the same advise sprint has just been fed, move along, or you'll be moved.

freediver, they're mostly just people explaining their experiences in their search for truth. the first one is a little brief, but the other two give a fairly decent picture. They are actually lectures by Aussies who've embraced Islam at a conference in Sydney. The two-part one specifically was probably the best one to watch, if you're going to watch any.

Well that 2nd guy again gives us no real ideas...  obviously his experience and knowledge is limited if he thinks only Muslims act in particular ways.

As for the science...  off the top of my head the Bible points out there are holes in the skys and where and black holes were only discovered recently, the vastness in the amount of stars and their individuality, etc, etc, etc...  does the Koran mention them?

No nothing there to hang a change of religion on.
