What can a flawless animal do to help somebody's sins?

In Islam we sacrifice animals, even till this day, but we don't believe a flawless animal will remove our sins. We sacrifice for sacrifice... sacrifice means to give up something, and that's what we do, we give up an animal (food, sustenance) and share it with others, less forunate than us. This symbol of sacrificing one of your animals was especially symbolic for desert dwelling peoples like the Arabs and the original Hebrews because it meant parting with some of your very necessary sustenance.

Perhaps the meaning of sacrifice, like many other aspects of the original religion the Hebrews followed became mixed up over time and by the time of Jesus (pbuh) they thought it was something to do with flawless animals covering sins?

Sacrificed animals are used to make banquets, to which it's commendable to invite the poorer members of society.

What did they supposedly do in the Temple ritual? Throw them away or something?

Anyway sacrifice in the Bible pre-dates the temple, so I don't doubt in Abraham's (pbuh) time for instance, it would've been much like it is today amongst the bedouins.
