Freedom of world press
Nov 21st, 2008 at 11:11pm

If we allow people from a country who does not have freedom of press to have any say in our country, we won't have freedom of press either.

Freedom of press (or lack thereof) is not decided by wealth or location.
It is decided by the religious or political overruling party.

That does not make sense sprint. You are saying that 'allowing' people to have a say undermines freedom of the press.

We don't have freedom of press. Sedition, among other things, gag orders, other fun things like that. And, if Rudd gets his way, the internet will be censored.

f/D - allowing people who want to quash freedom make the rules will result in our freedoms being quashed

Sure easel, we may not have the utopia of freedom one might imagine, but we are one of the world leaders in freedom.

saudi arabia

"....Religious freedom does not exist in Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam and home to the faith’s two holiest cities—Mecca and Medina. Islam is Saudi Arabia’s official religion, and all Saudis are required by law to be Muslims. The government prohibits the public practice of any religions other than Islam and restricts the religious practices of both the Shiite and Sufi Muslim minority sects. Although the government recognizes the right of non-Muslims to worship in private, it does not always respect this right in practice. ...."

http://www.freedomhouse.org/template.cfm?page=22&country=7482&year=2008

libya

"....There is no independent press in Libya. State-owned media largely operate as mouthpieces for the authorities, and journalists work in a climate of fear and self-censorship. Those who displease the regime face harassment or imprisonment on trumped-up charges....
....Nearly all Libyans are Muslim......
.....The government does not uphold freedom of assembly. Those demonstrations that are allowed to take place are typically meant to support the aims of the regime........
........Women enjoy many of the same legal protections that men do, but certain laws and social norms perpetuate many forms of discrimination, particularly in areas such as marriage, divorce, and inheritance......"

http://www.freedomhouse.org/template.cfm?page=22&country=7433&year=2008

yemen

".........The state maintains a monopoly over the media that reach the most people—television and radio. Access to the internet is not widespread, and the authorities block websites they deem offensive. Article 103 of the Press and Publications Law outlaws direct personal criticism of the head of state and publication of material that “might spread a spirit of dissent and division among the people” or “leads to the spread of ideas contrary to the principles of the Yemeni Revolution, [is] prejudicial to national unity or [distorts] the image of the Yemeni, Arab, or Islamic heritage.” Government authorities have used the Press and Publications Law to restrict press freedom, especially in recent years..............

........Women are afforded most legal protections against discrimination and provided with guarantees of equality. In practice, however, they continue to face pervasive discrimination in several aspects of life. A woman must obtain permission from her husband or father to receive a passport and travel abroad. Unlike men, women do not have the right to confer citizenship on a foreign-born spouse, and the process of obtaining citizenship for a child of a Yemeni mother and a foreign-born father is more difficult than that for a child born to a Yemeni father and a foreign-born mother. Yemen’s penal code allows lenient sentences for those convicted of “honor crimes”—assaults or killings of women for alleged immoral behavior. Laws requiring that a wife obey her husband were abolished by presidential decree in 2004.

Women are vastly underrepresented in elected office, and a study produced by the Women’s National Committee in 2004 found that women represented less than 3 percent of all government employees......

............Article 2 of the constitution states that Islam is the official religion, and Article 3 declares Sharia (Islamic law) to be the source of all legislation........

Reporters Without Borders press freedom index puts Australia in 28th place. http://www.rsf.org/IMG/pdf/cl_en_2008.pdf

Quote:
The Reporters Without Borders index measures the state of press freedom in the
world. It reflects the degree of freedom that journalists and news organisations enjoy
in each country, and the efforts made by the authorities to respect and ensure
respect for this freedom.

It's probably to do with FOI laws. For example, the Howard government decided that it was in the 'national interest' that the media not be allowed to find out how much money was spent on the firt home owners grant.
