My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge....

"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge...."
Hosea

easel asks,

Quote:
Is self defence ok? For example, if you are in a situation you did not initiate, can you defend yourself, the whole do unto others thing, I would hope if someone else was in a situation they did not start they would defend themselves.

If you have a gun and someone else has a gun, and they are going to shoot you, is it ok to get in first?

If someone robs you, can you go reclaim your possessions plus compensation?

If someone bashes your girlfriend, can you go give them a flogging?

Where do we draw the line? What can you do and what can't you do?

easel,

Let me 1st ask you this Q.

Why do we have to seek advise from others, to answer to such questions [as you ask]?

Why do we think that such questions are difficult?

I suggest, that if we are whole human beings, we should all know how to answer such [moral] questions.

Q.
And, why don't we?

NOW, THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTIONS [above]....

To answer such a question ["Is self defence ok?"] with certainty, 1st you need to remove yourself from the question / situation.

And to substitute into the equation, in your place, a '3rd [neutral] person'.

Now, ask the question again.

If an innocent [perhaps weak and vulnerable] person was clearly being attacked, assaulted, or threatened with death, by an 'evil doer',
.....in seeking to protect the 'victim', do you have the moral authority to defend the weaker person, and 'attack' the attacker[s]?

i.e.
If a woman on a public street was being attacked by two men, [if you are brave enough] do you have the moral authority to 'attack' the attacker[s]?

Answer the question above.

Now, that you have the answer, re substitute yourself into the situation / equation.

"Is self defence ok?"

Of course it is.

The moral answer to your questions [above], no matter who the victim is, is always the same.

Now, a caveat.

Romans 12:18
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
19  Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
20  Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
21  Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

The only proviso is [in self defence], you must act with a clean heart, you must act as a moral person, would act.

Because we must never use such violence, with any evil intent, or for gain, or with malice, or with artifice, or with guile.

Everything you do, you must do, as though God himself is standing right beside you, and knows the motivation which is in your heart.

And if the motivation or intent is evil, do not act.

Is violence wrong?

Yes.

Psalms 34:14
Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

Is it wicked, to defend yourself, or others from violence, and evil?

No.

Proverbs 8:13
The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

Psalms 5:5
The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.
6  Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing [deceit]: the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.

Psalms 7:11
God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.

Psalms 11:4
The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD'S throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.
5  The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.

easel,

HERE IS ANOTHER VERY DIFFICULT Q. FOR YOU....

Q.
Should we [the West] fight ISLAM?

OR, should we submit to ISLAM?

Let me simplify the Q. even further for you....

Should we submit to EVIL?

Err, do you know the correct answer?

It is very clear, that many ppl don't!

IN THE CONTEXT OF THESE QUESTIONS [above],
...i make this argument to you,

And i ask you this,
....Why are so few people in Western nations willing to confront an evil philosophy like ISLAM?

And why has ISLAM been so successful at making inroads into Western nations, subverting non-muslim political and community institutions and community values?

I myself will suggest an answer,

It is because muslims believe [in their moral position], and because we in the West [as a culture] don't believe,
....in anything!
....[except personal consumption, and pursuing our own personal pleasure.]

And for God's sake, woe betide anyone who confronts us, with our moral 'apostasy'!!

Dictionary,
apostasy = = the abandonment or renunciation of a belief *or principle*.

And, i am quite sure, that we [the West] will not win this war [which ISLAM is waging against us], because we are an amoral people,
....and, we don't care, that we are amoral.

Dictionary,
amoral = = lacking a moral sense; unconcerned whether something is right or wrong.

And, we won't win this war because,
...we hate the TRUTH.
...we hate the TRUTH.
...we hate the TRUTH.

Why can't we as a ppl, understand those words?

If you know the Bible at all well, you will understand that God often uses those who are evil, to destroy [punish] those who [claim to be godly but] are amoral, and self righteous.

And that is what is happening in the world, right now.

CONTINUED.....

"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge...."
Hosea

Hosea 4:1
Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2  By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3  Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they that strive with the priest.
5  Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

From the previous text...
".....Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another:"

None is willing to rebuke evil.

Proverbs 9:6
Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.
He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
8  Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
9  Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
10  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Today, the world is full of scorners.

Psalms 1:1
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2  But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

easel,

I cry, i weep.

Because i see what is coming.

Don't ask, because you are all scorners.

You should seek your God, and his righteousness, and not my words.
....because i am a fool in your eyes.

The Bible suggests that in the last days, the whole earth will come under the domination of a philosophy, which will use beheading against its enemies.

Revelation 13:7
And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
8  And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Revelation 20:4
And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast,.....

Thanks Yadda. That was wonderful.

Yes if I saw someone getting attacked I would, and have in the past, go and help them.

Therefore self defence is justified.

What about revenge though, is that wrong? What about if you don't feel anger or malice, but just want to even up the scales? What do you think? I don't have the Biblical knowledge that you do.

Hi easel,

We should not act in revenge [in my opinion].

And what sprint already says here applies i think....

http://www.ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1227973317/8#8

I believe we are justified in rebuking evil, and repulsing [physical] attacks, but we should try, where possible, to live peaceable with others.
.....BUT, not to the point of embracing an evil philosophy.

Because if we do embrace, and allow evil, we cannot at the same time, be God's ppl.

As Paul said....

Romans 12:18
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
19  Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

21  Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

Ok, but taking the path of least resistance, as Jesus did, would be to roll over and 'turn the other cheek'. Why should we not do this?

The NT says we should aspire to be Christ-like, to be perfect, as he was.

If you have the strength to be so, good!

More power to you!

Myself, i am not perfect.

I am a sinner.

My God, came in the flesh, to redeem sinners.

My God, knows that i am flesh, and that i am a weak creature.

My God will forgive those who seek him, and his righteousness.

Jeremiah 23:6
In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Jesus, is the LORD our righteousness.

But, we cannot fool, or deceive God, he is in our hearts.

If we sincerely repent, and seek him, he we forgive us our sins, and strengthen us.

That is God's promise [.....to redeem us].

Luke 5:32
I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Romans 7:14
For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
15  For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
16  If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
17  Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
18  For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19  For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20  Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21  I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
22  For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
23  But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
24  O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
25  I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Sincerely seek God, and hate evil.

Psalms 34:14
Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

Jeremiah 9:24
But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

Proverbs 8:13
The fear of the LORD is to hate evil:......
