Islamic dress standards in the surf
Dec 16th, 2008 at 12:51pm

What passes for acceptable clothing to wear on the surf for male and female muslims?

Ok, I'm sure the issue of Islamic dress standards in public places has arisen enough times and has been answered enough times already (that always seems insufficient for you though fd), but anyway here it is again for your benefit another time:

Islamic public dress standards are:

for males: covering between navel and knee.

for females: covering all but hands and face.

This includes covering with loose fitting clothing that the shape of the body cannot clearly be seen through, and must not be transparent.

regards.

The loose fitting clothing bit has me intrigued. It obviously rules out wetsuites. And any normal clothes are going to reveal your figure once they get wet. To get something sufficiently baggy would put you at risk of drowning. Does this effectively rule out surfing for devout Muslims? That would be quite ironic, given the original topic.

In my understanding the original topic was about an art display, where the artist had fused an aspect of Australian culture (the surfboard) with an aspect of Islamic culture (geometric designs), to promote understanding and tolerance. It had nothing at all to do with actually surfing, which was why I found your post to be very off topic and moved it here.

Either way, the Islamic dress standards stand as they are, consistent for all places and activities that are public. Your wonderment at how it could permit someone to surf or not is just completely irrelevant, as the idea of Islamic public decency/dress codes has nothing to do with facilitating the desire to engage in sports such as surfing.

Can't you just for once see something for what it is? Rather than always searching for the secret concealed 'Taqiyyah' meaning??

Seeing it for what it is, and wanting to know whether it is possible for a devout muslim to go surfing, are not mutually exclusive. It would be quite ironic if they couldn't. Furthermore, if surfing is an 'unIslamic' activity, couldn't Muslims get offended if they put Islamic designs on surfboards? It would be like putting Muslim symbols on a can of beer or a brothel.

In any case, don't the design styles predate Islam?

I don't see how surfing could be unislamic.

there is the invention of the burqini for women btw but I don't know how it fits etc

a few times I've seen on tv and elsewhere muslim men at the beach fully clothed and swimming- I believe one of them said that even though they only have to cover navel to knee that they cover more out of respect/support for their muslim sisters
