Iran to screen films about Katrina

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 19:02:49 GMT

Iran's third International Urban Film Festival is slated to screen the productions of a number of globally-acclaimed filmmakers.

Spike Lee's When the Levees Broke, Ashley Hunt's I Won't Drown on the Levees and Jeremy Campbell's New Orleans Media Talks will be screened along with 19 other films about Hurricane Katrina.

...

The event will also screen controversial filmmaker Scott Ritter's Bush Crimes: Hurricane Katrina, which is about the Bush Crimes Commission Hearings and the testimony by experts on the abandonment of New Orleans before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina.

Carl Deal and Tia Lessin's 81st Academy-Award-nominated film Trouble the Water also shows the impact of Hurricane Katrina on the city's poorest residents during and after the storm.

The Iranian festival's Children and Young Adults section also includes famous films such as Detlev Buck's Hands off Mississippi and Gabor Csupo's award-winning Bridge to Terabithia.

Iran's A Time to Love by Ebrahim Forouzesh and A Span of Heaven by Ali Vazirian will also be screened in the same section.

Iran's third Urban Film Festival, to be held from March 2 to 7, 2009, will screen Iranian and international productions in the categories of Feature-length, Video, Documentary, Short Fiction, Teaser and Animation, Children & Young Adults and Islamic Revolution.

The intolerance of ISLAM, to all un-ISLAMIC culture.

ISLAM is not tolerant [of justified criticism], nor is it an inclusive philosophy / culture.

On the one hand, ISLAM [and its adherents], are happy to use OUR freedom of speech, to categorise all of the faults of non-ISLAMIC culture.

But ISLAM is too weak to suffer self criticism, from its own people, and ISLAM is definitely too intolerant to suffer criticism from non-muslims!!

Google,

only 1.17 million hits on Google.

Exactly. How very, very true.

Considering half of them are semi-pornographic, could any decent moral God-fearing BOWING SERVANT of the almighty blame them?

A rather humourous note. There's about 40 films listed (in the wikipedia article) that are banned in Iran. If you check Australia in the same list, there was about 50  Grin

Is there a difference in the reason why the films were banned, have any bans been lifted since?

Because freedom of speech and expressioin is an enshrined belief in the west, and will be protected no matter what the circumstance.

I don't think that's necessarily the case, many films have been banned in Australia over the years, most have since been allowed to screen under revised ratings, and some continue to be banned due to current court proceedings or are banned temporarily after horrific events and later released.

I'm assuming in Iran films are banned for different reasons. Anything slightly critical of Islam, any indications of homosexuality, a breast perhaps, things of those nature. So while a list may be longer of Australian banned films compared to Iran, one would need to look harder at the reasons why certain films are banned (or were).

Translation of Jordan's doublespeak:

"Our Western reasons for banning films are completely 100% valid, no matter what, but those sub-human Muslims who ban things, do so only for invalid and oppressive reasons".

No, not really, I don't like banning anything much, censorship in any form repulses me.

But just announcing that Australia has a longer list doesn't mean anything, and you know that.

Yes I agree, it means about as much as Yadda's announcing that Iran has engaged in censorship.

All countries engage in censorship, and they all have varying reasons for doing so. For instance, when Israel censored "Jenin Jenin" did we hear any of the advocates of free speech proclaiming their inconsistent opposition to censorship? Of course not...

Why did Israel censor "Jenin Jenin"? Was it for a reason you consider valid? Knowing the players involved, I'm sure it was valid for you... And that's what it comes down to doesn't it? The players involved. If one country censors something which makes them look bad, then that's ok, because they're "friendlies" but if another does it, that's so terrible, because they're "unfriendlies".

I really don't know how you people live with such stinking hypocrisy. Doesn't it make you feel so degraded and intellectually compromised?

You're doing a massive amount of assuming there, abu, which in turn makes YOU the huge hypocrite, but then again, you always have been. I already told you what I thought of censorship, the only time I would personally find it valid would be in rare cases of current court proceedings, but that would only be a temporary ban and only in a limited area.

Of course I don't think the banning of Jenin Jenin was valid, but why must you constantly deflect to other examples? Are you that insecure that you need to push others down to make yourself feel manly? To maybe validate your belief system in some way?

It seems odd that a supposed supreme being would get all bent out of shape about whether topless girls appear in films.

Says more about the petty minded nature of his religious followers and their sexual hangups than it does about God.

He doesn't want us to become slaves to our own desires, for this reason he advises us to avoid debauchery.

Quite sound advice if you ask me.
