However, we have to learn to stop seeing them as necessarily aspiring to be Europeans.

Well, most of them are far more European than anything else. Tallow's question of wrong skin or wrong totem is apt. Aboriginality today is a political stance, especially when you can claim aboriginality because one of your grandparents was half aboriginal.

Identification with a remote indigenous ancestor is a phenomenon that appears to occur the world over. Who knows why... Maybe it captures the imagination, or endows a sense of place or a sense of purpose and destiny on the legatee. It often occurs within white communities to European descent people estranged from their European land and kin but who feel a 'spiritual' connection to the old country.

Maybe this kind of identity dissipates after 3 generations and perhaps is the reason for the state recognising one eighth aboriginality

For their part, I'm told full blood aborigines shun mixed blood relatives and do not aspire in any way to become European or Euro-centric.

This kind of aspiration is also shunned and discouraged in other parts of the world, hence the derisive term 'banana Asians' in Asian nations.

Yes I have always had a grave aversion to guillotines, because of the french aristocracy in my dim past, probably 128 times removed, but I still do not crave snails, but I do enjoy being rude to stupid americans, so who knows how far the genetic bond holds? Grin

Funny you should mention that... Some days I wake up and out of the blue I'm sure I don't like Slavs.  Grin
