FEDERAL Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick has defended the navy against suggestions it cultivates demeaning attitudes towards women.

Ms Broderick's comments followed revelations sailors aboard the HMAS Success offered financial rewards to crew members who slept with female sailors.

The sailors had reportedly compiled a book, titled The Ledger, detailing financial rewards for male crewmen who slept with female sailors.

Sailors who slept with female officers or lesbians stood to gain more money, according to the reports. The book was apparently discovered by crew and the captain was alerted.

Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the navy must investigate allegations that sailors were challenging each other to have sex with crewmates, warning such behaviour had the potential to discourage women from joining the defence forces....

Pity girls didn't create this "ledger" type sex adventure.

This is not such a big deal, let the navy deal with it.

But the punishment has to fit the crime. They should be reprimanded, but not more than that.

They didn't rape anyone, or harass anyone. They just created a ledger which as far as we know, may have been unrealistic fantasy, where sailors were going to bs each other about who they slept with. Men have been known to lie about their sexual exploits.....

Yeah its' dumb, but these are bored sailors on long ocean going voyages to the gulf. Not a lot to do.
