Bombs explode at Jakarta hotels: police

Police say bombs have exploded at two hotels in the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

The facade of the Ritz-Carlton hotel was blown off in one blast this morning and another explosion hit the Marriott hotel, police said.

An Associated Press reporter saw three injured taken away from the Ritz.

The Department of Foreign Affairs was aware of reports of an explosion and was in contact with the Australian embassy in Jakarta to investigate what happened, a spokeswoman said.

The Marriott was bombed in 2003, killing 11 Indonesians and a Dutch banker.

And it is five years since the Australian embassy in Jakarta was bombed, killing 10 people and wounding 161 in September 2004.

Exactly right, it could have been ANYBODY. Only Islamophobes would say that those responsible were muslims. For example, it could easily have been:

- dissident farmers unhappy with the price of grain;

- criminals looking to collect a debt;

- Hindu or Buddhist separatists;

- an accidental gas explosion in two separate places at the same time.

So please stop being racist and islamophobic and biggotted. Until we know that the bombers have sworn on the koran and are not members of mossad impersonating muslims, we should say that it could have been any person of any random religion just throwing bombs around for no particular purpose.

The real question is what the Indonesian authorities will do about it. I believe they'll do what we'd expect of a democratic state under the rule of law and go after the culprits hard.
