And what, pray tell, are imans?  Grin

How about astrolabe, sextant, algebra, algorithms, coffee, cafes, refined sugar, modern chemistry, chainmail armour, stained-glass, mirrors, bullet cartridges, hand gun, kerosene, tar/bitumen roads (baghdad was first city with tar-paved roads), windmill, camshaft, fountain pen, syringe, equitorium, thermometer, pinhole camera, messenger pigeons, bank cheques, guitar... just to name a few...

coffees good - quite addictive I believe.

syringes ??
Quote:
Many of the technical difficulties which had faced those experimenting with blood transfusion were removed after 1853 by the invention of the hypodermic syringe, with its hollow pointed needle.
Credit for the evolution of this universally useful appliance is usually given to Doctor Alexander Wood (born 1817), who was appointed Secretary of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1850.

Quote:
9th century AD: The Iraqi/Egyptian surgeon Ammar ibn 'Ali al-Mawsili' technically invented the first such syringe in the 9th century using a hypodermic needle, a hollow glass tube, and suction to remove cataracts from patients' eyes, a practice that remained in use up until at least the 13th century and which came into renewed use in the 20th century.

Nothing new that the West lie about having invented everything under the sun.

Every culture exaggerates its salubrity and makes wild claims about its superiority over all others.

astrolabe... The astrolabe was introduced to the Islamic world in the eighth and ninth centuries through translations of Greek texts.

sextant... In 1731, Thomas Godfrey and John Hadley independently invented the reflecting quadrant, a precursor to the sextant. John Campbell invented the sextant in 1757. The octant could only measure latitude, and not longitude. Royal Naval Captain John Campbell's sextant could measure both longitude and latitude.

Now b4 you have another coniption Aboo...  it depends on what sort of sextant you are talking about.

algebra... While the word "algebra" comes from Arabic word (al-jabr, الجبر literally, restoration), its origins can be traced to the ancient Babylonians.

refined sugar... Indians discovered how to crystallize sugar during the Gupta dynasty, around AD 350.  During the Muslim Agricultural Revolution, Arab entrepreneurs adopted the techniques of sugar production from India and then refined and transformed them into a large-scale industry.

Another historic milestone for the annals of Arab innovation (if not of actual technical know-how of how to make it (ahem) happen. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose)

Arab innovation and science in a nut (boom, boom) shell.

Do we need to be always politically correct.
In the world of universal deceit telling the truth is a revolutionary act.
