"Silence is consent" - congrats to Paul Haggis

Quote:
OSCAR-winning filmmaker Paul Haggis has severed his ties with the Church of Scientology in protest against the sect's position on gays and its treatment of members.

The Canadian-born director, who scooped Oscars for the hit films Crash and Million Dollar Baby, resigned from the organisation in a letter to church spokesman Tommy Davis.

The letter, which surfaced on the blog of former Scientologist Marty Rathbun, was dated August 19.

Blasting the highly secretive organisation as "morally reprehensible", Haggis took Davis to task for not denouncing statements by the church's San Diego branch supporting Proposition 8, a controversial ban on gay marriage in California.

"The church's refusal to denounce the actions of these bigots, hypocrites and homophobes is cowardly. I can think of no other word," Haggis wrote in the August 19 letter that was later published on the blog of former Scientologist Marty Rathbun.

"Silence is consent, Tommy. I refuse to consent." ..............

I just conducted a quick audit (attached), and on that basis, I agree that Scientology has characteristics that mark it as a dangerous and evil cult.   Cool

I think Ron L Hubbard would have, or must have, been a really good poker player. Far better than the original inventors of Jesus Christ, because he didn't have an "unknown" history on his side.

What a great scam. He appeals to the male ego brilliantly.
First there is information that seems very logical and scientific, but then the further that one is roped in, the more incomprehensible the logic becomes.
The ego will sacrifice logic for power any day of the week (hence we have politicians) and logic is sacrificed big time in scientology.

Ahh yes, they are progressing further towards revealing the "big secret", but in actuality, they are closing themselves off from the real truth.
Not too dissimilar from most other pursuits I suppose.i

That reminds me of my initial learning experience with Quantum mechanics.  Grin (until I actually started to understand it)

Regardless of the field, if you totally confuse people with a mass of details, it tends to convince them of the legitimacy of the argument.

From the perspective of an individual, he will tend to take things on faith, in the belief that even if he doesn't understand it, nobody else seems to have a problem with it - After all, nobody is asking questions.

The herd mentality prevails  if everybody else takes that same attitude, and nobody actually admits that they don't understand.

It's the same with many religions. Scientology doesn't have a monopoly on brainwashing.
