personal criticism in signatures
Apr 1st, 2010 at 10:13pm

It seems a few members have taken to using their signatures to post criticism of other members. I haven't put much thought into it, but now I am getting a few complaints about the practice. Most of the comments would be perfectly reasonable as a 'one-off' statement, but the signature function allows people to 'flood' the board with it, and prevents the target from responding on an equal footing.

I would like to hear people's opinions on where we should draw the line with signatures.

It's obsessive and infantile to use a signature to malign and criticise another forum member.

Just out of interest, what does your signature mean? I googled it and this forum came out on top.

I've always decoded it as 'fault not stars but slaves', and a Google search for this line has the Wikipedia.com article on Robert E. Lee at the top of the list. Is Helian a clandestine Confederate sympathizer? Cheesy

I think you might have it. But why remove the vowels?

Helian is a Kalahari Bushman. His unfamiliarity with the concept of the vowel leads him to speak with clicks in substitute, and obviously clicks cannot be expressed in a text based medium.

Yes it is.

I would like to post here occasionally - but one member's signature making a personal attack against me is making it too difficult.

How could I, or others in a similar situation, make a positive contribution when this nasty signature is staring you in the face constantly.

It is meant to hurt someone else, but it's easier to use my nick for effectiveness because he can't get to the person it's intended for.

Everyone who reads this forum sees it. These are bully boy tactics.

It’s leetspeak for “fault not stars but selves"

as in

“The fault, dear Brutus, lies not in our stars but in ourselves”.

Yes freedom of speech is fine as long as it doesn't hurt people deliberately.

Don't you think it's a little hypocritical being an advocate for free speech?

Or is it OK as long as it doesn't affect you personally?

It is also abusive and infantile to use a main body of msg to malign and criticise another forum member. It follows then that using a signature as a mirror to reflect an abuser ugliness back to him/her is a legitimate tool.
