I've deleted all those nasty comments you wrote about FD a couple of weeks ago on his other forum.

My comments were no more nasty than yours mantra. I am not ashamed of any comments I've posted mantra, and unlike you,I don't try to use them to influence others opinions about totally unrelated matters.
Freediver has made it clear that my signature was factual, I'll let others be the judge if they risk it or not.

Deepthought is a member here.

Yes he does post personal info about people elsewhere.

This from a man who made loud protestations against this sort of activity.

How many times did DT ramble on about safety at his site.

No sites are safe if someone really wants to know about you.

Unfortunately the whole story is never told when someone is being accused of something.  DT isn't the only forum owner who has been accused of having personal details posted on one of his boards and if you went back a little in forum "history" - you would know that his personal details were published long before he reacted. A lot of the "gossip" you read about in posts is speculation only.

People like to hate him.

I'm sure that's all true (notwithstanding that these accusations are common and many where DT is concerned).

However, being a forum owner should require you to be above reacting by posting personal information. He had a big mouth when it came to accusing other forum owners as well (including this one).

We all react in different ways. Some of us would ignore it, but others can't, especially when they're pushed too far.

I would eventually walk away if I couldn't stop it. Some of these accusations get very nasty.

This board, for the most part, has remained fairly decent, but if denigrating comments are allowed to flourish, it will just become like many others. People generally want to post somewhere where you can use your wit instead of profanities.

A good reason not to be a forum owner if one can't control oneself. We can only speculate as to how much personal information on others is traded via PMs.

True.

I wonder what privacy will mean in, say, 20 years from now. Take a look at users of facebook (facebookies?) and users of twitter (twits?). They start young when privacy is not much of a concern and publish very personal details of themselves. I wonder how the world will deal with privacy when stuff you wrote 20 years ago is recycled.

Maybe by then those who value privacy will be seen as abnormal.

Good question.
IMHO, there will be such massive volume of poo produced during next 20 years in addition to what is already there that it will be near impossible to mine through it.

There is already an enourmous amount of crap on the internet, but google is getting very sophisticated at helping people get what they want. The only saviour may be sites going bankrupt and no-one bothering to put the info back online.

Agreed, it isn't very difficult to pinpoint incriminating information about people on the internet even now. The problem with hoping that many webpages "go offline" is that a lot of sites still end up safely archived on the WebArchive anyway, so the best advice is just to avoid uploading information that people can use against you completely or at least not use your proper name (or any name attached to you) when you're doing it. If you're talking about breaking the law don't use your home computer.

You'd have to be pretty bored with life to look for information on people you don't even know.
