Forum Rules
Jun 20th, 2010 at 9:02pm

Hey all

As a new member, I've taken the time to re - read the rules for this forum .. and quite frankly I am happy with the rules which exist. If anything .. they seem very reasonable (to me).

http://www.ozpolitic.com/forum/forum-rules.html

However, I do have the following concern :

Does this forum allow the use of multiple ids?? The rules appear silent on this issue .. and unfortunately this is an issue for all forums.

As I see it .. IP's which release more than 1 id onto this forum .. do so because the ONE person behind the multiple ids, has a malevolent agenda of some description.

I can understand a (now almost extinct) scenario where partners or siblings etc may share the one computer .. but even so .. on other forums (such as Yahoo) .. the people in question have been very open about their association and they've logged onto the forum as distinct individuals so there is no ambiguity whatsoever.

I am not referring to nor am I concerned with such (rare) circumstances here. I am referring to those who intentionally release multiple ids into the one forum even though they are the one person.

I am of the opinion that such a practice should NOT be allowed and indeed should constitute grounds for suspension of all ids which that IP has released. Other forums function on this basis also.

Your thoughts please???

Lisa - I don't think it's quite that simple.
IP addresses can change every time you boot up your
computer & some people have special programs which change
them all the time.
It's true though that some people do have a static IP address
but not usually full on flamers & trolls.

I understand this Bobby .. I am however referring to instances where the ONE IP releases MORE THAN ONE id into this forum.

I am being very specific here.

As far as I can tell...each ID can be associated with only one email address (actually, I know this for sure, because I tried to reserve my old Yahoo ID so as to prevent any would-be flamer from impersonating me...again...).

What I'm not sure about is: if it would have made any difference whatsoever, if I had tried to use a different email address and either used my own laptop or logged onto on one of my sons' computers to try to create an alternative ID...

Either way, the only type of flamer that warrants banning is the type that repeatedly makes nasty personal attacks on individuals and/or groups...

In my experience, most other flamers are at least midly amusing and mostly harmless...

Multiple ID's are allowed, but not to get around a ban that has been put in place. People are judged on what they actually post, not on what their intentions are. People are banned, not computers or email addresses or IP numbers.

Ok .. so it's the PERSON behind the id who gets banned .. and once this happens .. this PERSON may not attempt to get around the ban by returning with another id. Correct?

Correct Lisa.

FD has set a tone here where people are given a lot of freedom, but nasty, personal insults are not tolerated, racist and obscene behaviour is not tolerated, and threatening behaviour is not tolerated.

We do try to not be too precious about it all, and we realise that sometimes people get worked up and may call someone an idiot, or moron, or whatever, and allowances are made for people saying stuff in the heat of the moment.

Personally when I see stuff I consider borderline offensive, I try to contact the person and suggest that they self moderate, and go back and reword their post to replace any offensive language with something more suitable, the edit function is very useful in that regard.

Stuff that is way over the line however, will be binned, and the offending poster warned about their behaviour.

Grossly obsene or threatening behaviour however is more likely to just attract an immediate ban.

The best way I have seen to get rid of trolls is to just starve them to death, anyone who is just seeking to provoke a response will usually give up eventually, once they realise they are not getting the response they tried for.

Hey Mozza .. many thanks for your timely words of advice.

Most of us are here to post our perspectives on various issues/topics etc and to chat to others. Personally .. I love the diversity which an online forum such as this engenders. To be brutally honest .. it actually excites me. I come online to be amazed by some of the posts I read ..  particularly those reflecting a different interpretation of the world .. and I find it equally amazing when others see things the same way I do.

I know that I personally need ONE ID and ONE IP in order to post my perspective. For the life of me I cannot fathom why another individual would feel the need to waste their time and life with different proxy IPs and heaps of multi ids. I guess I believe in the KISS principle ( Keep It Simple n Safe ). I'm funny that way lol Smiley

Besides which .. I've got a life which basically means if I'm posting on this forum of an evening .. I am probably also answering personal and professional emails, monitoring a washing machine as well as a clothes dryer and as if that isn't enough .. I'm receiving calls from family members about problematic babies who refuse to sleep and who need nannying next weekend .. sighs ( <-- that basically sums up tonight )

So .. I use ONE IP/ID and I've got a life .. I'm weird that way .. smirk Smiley Anyone else out there who's also weird lmao Smiley

If racist behaviour wasn't tolerated, half the members of this board would have been booted long ago.

I'll echo that sentiment, Lisa. If we all saw things the same way, the world would be boring.

Lisa, yeah I'm wierd like that as well. I'm prepared to take ownership of what I say. And apologise or change my view when I get it wrong. But also fight hard for what I honestly think.

Annie, can you take this further...I have certainly read people that have expressed "racist views" and "apparently racist views". I say apparently because there are times when the label is just slung around and there are times when some may have a cultural criticism and that is incorrectly labelled.

There are also some that genuinely believe in gene superiority but they are usually confronted exhaustively and usually (unfortunatly pointlessly)...I will often leave comments, that some may think should be moderated, because I think others forum members should get a full spectrum of where other posters are coming from.

There is one board here that I simply refuse to post on anymore and actually almost never visit.

Actually, I don't like any kind of personal criticism, or praise. I prefer people to stick to the topic. The only reason people are given leeway is because we can't be bothered moderating everything that comes up.

If someone wants to make a serious argument in favour of racism, racial superiority, discrimination etc, they are welcome to. It is the posts encouraging blind hatred or ridicule that will attract our attention.

Bottom line: If you see something you don't like, either ignore it completely, or report it. Just don't respond to it. The biggest problem we have as moderators is tit-for-tat exchanges that get out of hand, then people expect us to trawl through pages of their own BS to sort out who did what. We don't care who started it.

Totally and utterly agree.

After a period of being ignored the flamers usually fade into the sunset.
