I heard Quartet No. 14, C Sharp Minor, Opus 131 live recently. It is a cavalcade and final summary of Beethovens musical ideas in seven movements, written when completely deaf. It does sound like something written by a deaf musical genius. Schubert wanted to hear it on his deathbed and his friends did play it for him a few days before he passed.

Maybe that's why he passed ? Me, I hope the last thing I hear is Kathleen Ferrier's performance of the last song from Mahler's 'Das Lied von der Erde'
