The single was performed by The Swingers;
the group's frontman Phil Judd was previously a member of Split Enz.
Although the band had several hit songs in New Zealand,
"Counting the Beat" was their only major chart success in Australia,
and they are considered a one-hit wonder in that country.
The song is well known for its catchy beat and memorable music video.

You know the reason why artists dressed like the opposite sex back then in the 1970s and 1980s? Because it was rebellious. There was gradual acceptance of homosexuality back in the time the sexuality was being legalised. Today, we don't really give a damn if someone seems gay. It is none of our business. I would imagine that the trans community would be copping the abuse today much like what the homosexual community copped in the 1980s. But, in 30 or so years, nobody will really give a damn.

David Jones (Bowie) has a son and a daughter. He was married to a beautiful woman, Imam. Being on stage looking like an ambiguous gendered performer is quite a contrast to Bowie's personal life.

Bowie was a stage show genius.
He created the character Ziggy Stardust -
with all the songs, costumes and story.
He predicted the future - he was about 50 years ahead of his time.
In interviews he always referred to Ziggy in the 3rd person as
it wasn't him but his creation.
