Oh golly golly gosh Ethel,...so are you suggesting Mrs Abbott give up her own job/business, the same way Mrs Rudd was told to abandon her employment business by Labors union power-brokers, a business  she herself had built from the ground up, because it's success unfortunately could be attributed to Howards evil work-choices... a conflict/irony of political interest Labors unions machinists couldn't have Australians knowing about, only for her hubby to be knifed in the back before having even completed his 3 year term?

Smiley...  I bet she wishes she'd kept it now.

Yes as amazing as this seems, people have lives away from politics Ethel, prior to becoming PMs, and family relatives there of.

OK!

And Labor are liberators of woman eh?

Tell that to Mrs Rudd who gave up so much only to see them twist the knife before the next election.

Ok, Libs replaced their leader, but I think this is a little different from replacing a PEOPLE elected PM in power, the people themselves had elected.

Who elected Turnbull in again?

Smiley Not us!

This is why it's different.

Like Julia says, Move forward.

Wink

Ummm...mellie, you are a tad confused.   Mrs Rudd gave up the AUSTRALIAN arm of her successful business ( used by the Howard Government as well) to avoild conflict of interest.

Mrs abbott should perhaps distance herself from her husband in his policies on childcare - they have the potential to increase her take home pay.

and to think that Vegy is seriously considering this a conflict of interest issue...

there is a reason you are considered dumb. This is one example.

So Vege do YOU expect Abbott to ignore an area that is VERY important to MANY families out there because of this? Please be realistic for once.

It is virtually impossible for a PM to operate without advantaging or disadvantaging his friends family or collegaues at some stage. I think some of the conflict of interest rules are petty and ridiculous. When a finance minister has to divest himselc of $10,000 of banking shares because he might somehow change something to his advantage I think we have lost the plot a little. Conflict of interest DOES occur but usuallit is jhiust POTENTIAL conflict.

Yes i agree there longy, personally i think 'conflict of interest' is one of the most overrated issues facing society these days. Most of the time, there is NO conflict.

I have no issue with either scenario, i do however have any issue with the ALP supporters constant criticism of Workchoices yet when it's pointed out that Rein's business (AND thousands upon thousands of others) was greatly assisted by them, everyone remains quiet.

Workchoices?
Who mentioned Workchoices?

It seemed there were lots of calls for Rein to distance herself from anything that would appear to benefit from her husbands position.

I have no complaint with any extra funding to programs such as these, but I would point out that the coalition had more than 10 years to address these areas.

As someone who was involved in fundraising for various childrens programs I know how hard it was to get federal funding during those years.

I would hesitate to infer that extra funding to child minding centers would be gobbled up in increased fees.

I missed that reference, but then I tend to overlook a lot of mellies stuff.
Cheesy

I think the objection to Reins business was in the area of conflict of interest, in that she could benefit from government subsidies.
I dont recall any reference to workchoices at the time'
I could be wrong.

Have a good nite.

Chuckey, you have just exposed the great Abbott childcare centre conspiracy. I don`t know what we`d do without you, you have really saved the day.  As you so clearly point out, child care should NOT receive any governmental assistance because Margie Abbott works in that sector, your logic is stunning as usual.  We are appropriately stunned.
