Coalition Flip Flopped On Action Against Japan
Aug 11th, 2010 at 9:59pm

Parties 'me-too' on whaling

International legal action against Japanese whaling will continue regardless of who wins the election.

The coalition has announced its whaling plan, which is similar to the government's.

Both parties would continue the case in the International Court of Justice to end the annual whale hunt in the Antarctic.

That action has already been lodged and is expected to take several years.

The opposition's environment spokesman Greg Hunt said his party would take a "respectful" approach to Japan, while taking clear action.

Critics say the legal action jeopardises relations with one of Australia's largest export markets.

Both major parties also appear reluctant to send a vessel to monitor whaling operations in the Antarctic this summer.

Vessels have been sent occasionally in the past to police clashes with protesters and gather evidence for the legal case.

As part of the whaling policy, the coalition would spend $500,000 on a national plan to prevent and deal with whale strandings on Australian shores.

"Many Australians would like to see more being done to prevent such strandings," Mr Hunt said in a statement.

There will be another $500,000 for the Dolphin Research Institute in Victoria to work on protecting dolphins from disease and other threats.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett said the whale stranding plan was "half-baked" because Australia already had professional response teams in place.

Mr Garrett said the coalition had flip-flopped on legal action against Japan, with leader Tony Abbott speaking against it in January.

The ALP, in particular Garrett has NO credibility on this issue and have NO right to criticise the Coalition on it. Bloody pathetic performance for the ALP AGAIN.

Hang on Iam I remember the liberals banging on about trade  and our good realations with Japan being put at risk if this court action went ahead.

Meanwhile, the IWC scientific committee is drafting up plans for the resumption of commerical whaling.

Why we should allow whaling

Come on Smithy, you and i both know 'doing something' about the Whaling situation is a vote winner, Rudd proved that in 2007, however never had the spin the follow through. Plus it may be the case the coalition was simply being over cautious about our relations.

Most cerainly it's a vote winner and sending the customs ship in 08 was really nothing more than a publicity stunt, but the flip flopping by the liberals can also be perceived as just "spin" as well.
This is the second example of this I've heard today, Andrew Robb on PM was whinging & calling for the AFP to be involved in the treasury leak showing the 800mill budget blackhole. It was cringe inducing not to mention frustrating to listen to the back pedalling when the case of the coalition calling for the resignation of Rudd using treasury leaks that were to their advantage was brought up.
If I've noticed this get ready for the ads highlighting these apparent blackflips/double standards in the coming days.

Hmmnnn....has the Grech been prosecuted yet!?

Did he have some Coalition-friendly colleagues in Treasury...who might perhaps have been encouraged to leak the latest story as a pre-emptive strike so as to minimise political capitalisation by the Labs and/or as an excuse not to submit further policies for proper costing!?

Either way, the Libs are not looking oood on economic matters - not least because big business aren't impressed by their counter-productive voodoo economics and penny-pinching on top of their irrational and divisive attacks on migrant labour...
