What are you watching
Sep 12th, 2010 at 11:29pm

It was my pick at the video shop tonight and, being into a complex storyline, I picked something in the foreign section by some Russian bloke who was influenced by Tolstoy... or, something... So we're talking art here.

It's about the journey of two young peasant Tirolean girls (shouldn't call them girls, really, they're 'old enough to butcher' as they say) in Nazi Austria who form a lesbian relationship and escape from a work camp in Poland in the hopes of returning to their village in Italy (I think... Or wherever Tirolians come from). The history of the Tirol is what attracted me to this movie. Apparently there's a north and a south Tirol.

Anyway the mrs has just hit the sack, so I might settle in to watch it... I'm going to have to keep the sound right down (which doesn't matter anyway... because its dubbed) as the mrs has an early start tomorrow and I don't want to wake her.

Still... But starting to cool a bit around the edges... to about eating temperature.

Movie was crap... The intimate moments cut to some milk maid licking her lips staring out over an alpine valley... a metaphor for, I dunno.... Brokeback vulvae? Carpet licking(?)... Bloody artists.

Just that one word, lesbian, blinded you to the rest of the very clear warning on the package. Some people just can't be told, it seems: "two young peasant Tirolean girls ...in Nazi Austria who form a lesbian relationship and escape from a work camp in Poland in the hopes of returning to their village in Italy ..."
What were you thinking?!?

Yesterday I watched the 1995 re-make of Billy WIlder's Sabrina, directed by Sidney Pollack (1954 original with Bogart). The remake is with Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond. Excellent.

I thought the Tirol thing might have been worth watching it for... Apparently there's a north and a south Tirol...

The lesbian scene would have added to the ambiguous Tirolean political issues of the day managed by Mussolini and Hitler... If the Russian direktor influenced by Tolstoy hadn't cut away to an abstract alpine vulvic metaphor.... or, something.

Well I wouldn't mind watching the next Alien Movies (the Prequels) which have something to do with where the Aliens originally came from.

But I had to settle for "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence".
I didn't mind though,
I've read the book "The Seed and the Sower"
by Sir Laurens Van der Post,
which the movie was based upon
and I don't mind watching David Bowie as possibly the only musician that can actually act alongside such established actors as Jack Thompson and Tom Conti. In fact, I still don't think there is anyone who could do as well as Bowie for that role of the 'near perfect' South African Boer in a War that was a world away.
A real good movie/book upon the 'Human Condition'.

...the song by Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Sylvan is absolutely a classic.

I thought that Frank Sinatra was a very good actor. From memory, "Von Ryan's express" was a very good movie.

Ah yes Amadd,
Sinatra had his fair share of flicks to his name and he could indeed act.
Von Ryans Express is a really good film.
I think Bowie pips him though because of his ability to change his persona to meet the character - something that takes real good actors years to achieve, similar to Depp's method acting.

I liked Jagger's Ned Kelly, but I must take it with the mass view that he 'sucked'!

I think Elvis was a great Singer, but he was a lousy actor if ever there was one.

Madonna sucks (quite a lot I hear)

Harry Belafonte passed the test in my view.

...I'm sure there's others ?
