Sydney to get Wet 'n' Wild theme park
Sep 13th, 2010 at 8:16pm

Quote:
FINALLY a good news announcement for western Sydney - $80 million of infrastructure spending with the emphasis on fun.

The developers of the Gold Coast's Wet'n'Wild water park are splashing out on a Sydney version located in the city heartland but say it will be bigger and more thrilling.

Wet'n'Wild Sydney will be built on a 25ha site off the M4 and M7 motorways at Prospect with rides featuring the latest waterslide technology.

Highlights will include one of the world's biggest man-made beaches and the nation's first surfable wave pool.

A development application for the park will be lodged after a 50-year lease deal struck between the NSW Government and Village Roadshow yesterday.

It is hoped the fun park will open in time for summer 2013, giving western Sydneysiders an alternative to the long trek to the beaches to cool off.

Village Roadshow is also the company behind the mega Gold Coast theme parks Seaworld, Dreamworld and Warner Brother's Movie World which draw four million visitors a year.

Wet'n'Wild Sydney will be only minutes by car from the site of Wonderland Sydney the last theme park in the west which went bust in 2004 after 19 years.

But, Premier Kristina Keneally said drawing comparisons between the two would be like comparing "apples and oranges".

"The approach that Wet'n'Wild takes to its theme parks is utterly professional and they offer a fantastically run experience for families," she said.

Ms Keneally said she had taken her sons to the Gold Coast Wet'n'Wild in January this year and met a family from Camden who asked when they could get a park in Sydney.

"This will offer families in Western Sydney the opportunity to visit a world class attraction just down the road," she said.

Village Roadshow CEO Tim Fisher said road transport to the area had improved since Australia's Wonderland, later renamed Wonderland Sydney, was built in the 1980s.

The population surrounding the park had also boomed, with 1.2 million residents living within 20km of the site on Prospect Rd.

Village Roadshow will spend $5.2 million upgrading roads around the park.

Mr Fisher said Wet'n'Wild Sydney park would be completely different from its Queensland namesake.

Rides will include the Abyss, a 30m-tall attraction which will throw six riders down a vast funnel at speeds of up to 60km-an-hour.

The Python, Rattler and Constrictor will be adrenalin-pumped updates of the traditional twisting waterslide.

Another ride, the Viper, will allow riders on tubes to experience 6m vertical drops.

Mr Fisher said the park would also have a strong family focus, with smaller versions of the rides for younger children."We'll also have cabanas for parents who want to relax and monitor what their children are doing." Tickets would be in line with Gold Coast prices, between $45 and $50 each.

...

Woo! Surf's up! Cool

Like wonderland, will it close down too, as soon as the parks lease expires?

Just as most if not all our Sydney-based theme parks have?

What's the point in having a seasonal fun-park (summer weather), in an already drought affected state?

So who will want to drive all the way out to Prospect, just to go to the beach?

Like Wonderland, it will flop once the novelty wears off.

Will become a place schools visit, just Like Jambaroo...where Lebs control the action.

Roll Eyes..

I think its great.
Sydney is so efin boring these last 30 years.
Everything is squished up into some over-priced tourist rip-off known as Darling Harbour (are cheese sangas still $8 ?).
Gone is ...
Paradise Gardens
El Cabalo Blanco
Mt Druitt Waterworks
African Lions Safari
Bullens Animal World
Magic Kingdom
Wonderland
Old Sydney Town

and more I'm sure

A few are still kicking like Featherdale Farm and Jamberoo, but not much - oh, Luna Park made a comeback at least and Taronga Zoo lifted its game.

Sydney is so boring - no wonder the kids are getting up to no good and violence has increased.

This is why I go to New Zealand for a Holiday, besides Diving along the south coast of NSW - because there is really nothing to do unless you really want to rip-yourself-right-off.

Sydney has become nothing more than a Scam, nothing less.

Sydney sux!

Oh, and the greater part of the Sydney population find Prospect more 'accessible' than that little bottleneck known as Sydney City.

Japan and Hong Kong (I think) have Disney World. Not too expensive to get to either. Better than getting ripped off in Australia.

Same as ever in Australia.

Well i must agree.
Australia's "Entertainment Industry" is just as big a rort as the USA "Health Industry".
This is why Australians go to New Zealand for better quality/quantity & price for entertainment.
And USA people go to Canada for better quantity/quality of Health care.

Like one Astronaut said regarding passing over Australia "...the Great Boring Land Mass" - reckon he said this for many a reason too.

look, you just have to know how to live in Australia!
(This could take quite a few generations actually.)
I find it hilarious that Oprah Winfrey announced to 300 of her audience that she was going to bring them "TO AUSTRAAAALIAAAA!", to rapturous cheers, screaming hysterics and tears. I was laughing as much as they were yelling. So, they're all coming to Australia to get on a bus and go down to the Opera House and listen to the crickets and look at the Sydney harbour bridge at night eh and then go shopping in Melbourne? That'll be fun - it's really amusing watching tourists in Australia trying to look for something exciting to do. It actually tires them out. Much like the people who run Tourism Australia - have you ever seen a more boring bunch of flat-affect faces? Hilarious!! It would make an excellent newspaper cartoon.

The other great irony in Australia is watching all the people who immigrate here, then try to do everything possible in their power to retain their native culture for their entire lives, only to see their children and grandchildren turn into typical Aussies. That's not boring, surely.

It really depends on what you find boring or not. Australia isn't really into theme parks in a big way. We're more into commuter traffic gridlocks, road rage, corporate psychopaths in the workplace and cramming as many people into the smallest possible areas in the largest continental island on the face of the earth.  That's interesting to watch how people deal with that as well you know.

It's mind-bendingly funny. See what all those lucky people on Christmas Island have ahead of them?

Grin I see your point SS and I agree with what you are saying.

In regards to Oprah at the Opera (the only unique thing to happen here since the Politcial intervention 200+ years ago ...not bad for a Big Barnacle  Wink ), I'm sure she will get her taste of 'sanitised' Australian culture that caters to the USA whim (I kinda thought she would go Queensland for that?). I doubt she will cross the threshold of cultural cliches to visit the Ferals in the Forests of Tasmania or the Dwarves of the Pilbarra (Mining), or our x3 World's Best Commercial Diving Academies. I'm not fussed though, I hope she enjoys her time here, along with her 'troop' ...getting a 3rd-rate Replication of what they can already get back in their own country.
Its like spending a fortune to travel around the other side of the world to a Pub or Bar and then drink a turgid VB (Vomit Beer) rather than enjoy what Beer that country has to offer. But in Australia's case, I don't think Oprah has a choice ...she will be ushered into a special room labelled "American Celebrities", even if she wanted to just go hang out with the Farmers of the Riverina.
I hope her 'troop' will be wearing Burkas, they sure do sound like Moslem women you know. Huh

look, my friend, "boring" is Australia's greatest defence, it always has been! It saves us from having to keep a huge standing army, navy and air force. And on top of that, we now have a waddling, droning prime minister just to drive the point well and truly home! See? Australia gets it right every time. There is wisdom behind all of these machinations. Not boring - wise.

In colonial times, people who came here routinely got a good flogging just to stop them from getting too bored. Everyone stood around and watched as well: you know, it must have been kind of entertaining.

It still happens today, just in different ways. Watch the excruciating looks on the faces of people stuck in 40km traffic gridlocks in Sydney.
It's fascinating how people can live like this.

And you thought people on Christmas Island have it bad!!
All their Christmases will come at once, once they get here!

I can't wait.

explains why Australia has always been consistent with having the highest Suicide rate in the world, and you thought Warfare was bad.

I guess the question begs - Do you listen to what your neighbour (another race)  says in regards to making it a better suburb, or do you listen to what your 'cousins' say ...who are far away in another country?

Anyway - I hope Wet n Wild kicks off. As someone like myself who jumped into a Billabong while being chased by some cops, and turned into a Scuba Diver ...I think it will do well.
