How much return do the Government get from building highways and roads.

Sometimes it is not all about the money.

if thats your best argument for the NBN then its pretty weak.

It was a comment on infrastructure spending in general and if read consecutively you would see it adds some balance to the prior post which was all about the cash.

While it does come into the debate with a considereable amount of substance it is far from the only argument.

In fact I would think that the most expensive option would be the Liberals proposed head in the sand approach, the longer we wait the more it will cost would be the obvious result.

NBN, must have house phone also connected with NBN
House phone would also require external power source, Unlike Telstra current self powered system.
Blackouts and unpaid power bills would also render emergency calls from NBN house impossible.
NBN does guarantee your power bill will increase.
NBN will have a higher carbon footprint then current systems.
NBN 100Mps connections will cost more then current providers already providing those speeds.
NBN does not guarantee it will be available to all Australians
NBN does guarantee that all Australians and future generations will be paying for it.

Internod do a Fibre to the Home service which is cheaper, you can get 100G at 100/8 for about $120.

or 100G at 50/4 for around $100. etc.

Only problem is that it is only available in one estate of 1,000 homes in Qld( fernbrook)

NSW, (4 sites) Gregory Hills, Central hills buisness pk, Parkbridge (Grange) and Oran Park town.

Vic, 6 sites and South Aust 3 sites.

i.e availability restricted to new estates where it is easy and profitable.

Nothing on the horizon for the average user other than the NBN.

Can someone answer my simple question since Im not real sure about this sort of stuff, but lets say we all get fibre.

So it comes into out office, goes to our modem which is tied to our server.  Will we need fibre from our server to our workstations to get the speed they are promising?

I suspect ethernet can keep up over short distances.

For the last decade or so the standard ethernet card had been 100Meg and most of the new ones are Gigabit cards.

the bit to be carefull with is the internal router you use as some of the home versions are slower, If you want commercial speed internal to your network (not direct connected) a commercial router would be an advantage. internal 100 meg or even Gigabit, internal fibre is also possible but probably overkill at this time.

My standard netgear f/w router is 10/100 meg ethernet ports which shouls be fine, still on 'G' for wireless 54Meg but never seen anyone get even close to this speed.

It could end up being an advantage to dedicate some functionality to the direct connected computers on your network and use the lower speed connections for things like web browsing where you do not need 100 meg type speed.
