The only way to stop the boats is to deny people smugglers a product to sell. That means reintroducing temporary protection visas, rigorous offshore processing and, where it can be done safely, turning boats around.

Last week’s court decision that the government’s asylum seeker processing lacked procedural fairness adds more confusion to this chaos. On this, as on so many other issues, the government has gone from bad to worse in the time since the prime minister herself announced that the government had “lost its way”.

Without a drastic change of policy, boat arrivals will continue and, quite possibly, substantially increase. If there was one step that the prime minister could take to prove that she’s serious about stopping the boats, it would be to pick up the phone to the president of Nauru. Nauru has a processing centre built with Australian taxpayers’ money that could be reopened within weeks.

Reopening Nauru would take the pressure off other detention centres and send the clearest possible message to people smugglers and their potential customers that they might not ever get to Australia.

Not reopening Nauru means that the boats will keep coming, the detention centres will keep filling and the costs will keep mounting. More detention centres will have to be opened but the government refuses to say which disused or underutilised military bases are now ear-marked to house illegal arrivals. It’s another Gillard mess that she has no clear plan to fix.

It sounds to me that not only has Gillard lost control of our borders and detention facilities, she and her red cheerleaders have taken to accusing Australians of being racist when they dare question her capacity to do the job she herself said she would do if elected...when she vowed she would take a harsh stance on boats, though clearly has not.

Funny, why didn't they call her racist when she first said she too would be cracking down on boats pre-election?

Because they knew their flaccid ALP too well, this and also knew she and the ALP never had any intention of keeping their pre-electroal sweetener promise after the election, so naturally, weren't too worried about about her pre-election spruke ,threats concerning stopping the boats before hand.

Meaning ALP's own supporters are OK with their government lying through their teeth, so long as it meets their own selfish requirements, ...ethics aside.

Lovely party, for a lovely people who lack Australian values.

More people have illegally arrived by boat during the election campaign than arrived in the last six years of the Coalition Government, Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Scott Morrison and Shadow Minister for Justice, Customs and Border Protection, Michael Keenan said today.

“The sixth boat arrival of the campaign means that 305 people have now arrived illegally during this election campaign, well above the 220 people that arrived over the last six years of the Coalition Government,” Mr Morrison said.

“The boats keep coming under Julia Gillard. This is the 153rd boat to arrive since Labor dismantled the Coalition’s strong border protection policies and the 85th this year alone. Yet another arrival shows that as long as Labor is in business, the people smugglers are in business,” he said.

“The Labor Party’s empty rhetoric on border protection was again exposed last night by South Australian Senator Anne McEwen, leader of Labor’s South Australian Senate ticket.

“At a debate organised by Getup! Senator McEwen was asked by moderator Senator Nick Xenophon if Kevin Rudd’s description of people smugglers as ‘scum’ was an example of emotive language that was inappropriate in discussing refugees and asylum seekers.

“In an extraordinary defence of the people smuggling racket, Senator McEwen stated that ‘People smugglers are just people trying to make a buck.’

“Julia Gillard must explain today whether she agrees with Senator McEwen who has betrayed Labor's real views on this issue and why Labor abolished the strong border protection regime they inherited from the Coalition.

“In defending the vile trade of people smuggling as ‘just people trying to make a buck’ Senator McEwen demonstrated Labor’s lack of commitment to stopping this abhorrent trade,” Mr Morrison said.

Mr Keenan said: “Today we have seen further evidence of the cost of this government’s failure to secure Australia’s borders, particularly to the people of Western Australia.

“The government’s secret plan to expand the Curtin Detention Centre is proof Labor has no intention and no resolve to stop the boats.

“Only the Coalition has a real plan to bring an end to the people smuggling trade to Australia,” he said.

Smuggling Muslims into Australia is illegal, this Labor endorsed and facilitated smuggling ring has to be smashed and the Australian connection exposed shut down and it’s Australian based organizer’s tried and JAILED.. Abbott must implement a Royal Commission if he is elected on Saturday.

The moment Abbotts elected, I sincerely hope he implements a Royal commission into Labors people (Um I mean vote smuggling) rings.

This isn't just a matter of Labor slacking off or being overly caring, or refugee light, ...they are serving as enablers in organised people smuggling rackets.

Absolutely disgraceful.
