Its quite simple.
A fast and efficient system of processing by Australian officials in Indonesia and Malaysia would solve the problem of the few desperate people taking desperate measures seeking asylum in Australia.
We have a very small issue with asylum seekers compared to the rest of the world and even when compared to poorer countries in our own region we certainly do not shoulder enough of the refugee burden.
No matter how many boats are arriving in Australian waters at the moment..its still a tiny minority of the worlds Asylum seeker problem and as we all know the vast majority of these people comes from war torn countries where we hold some responsibility.
Howards solution was to bomb Afghanistan and Iraq and then when the refugees poured out of those countries he decided to take political mileage and tell Indonesia that this product of our invasion was their problem and not ours.
The people who declare the Asylum seeker problem can be solved simply by making life so hard if they try and seek refuge here ignore the facts that we have an international obligation to help but we also have a regional obligation to shoulder a fair share along with our already over burdened nieghbours who, unlike us, did not cause this refugee problem in the first place.

13,000.
That's the number of asylum seekers Howard took in at the time the people smugglers were put out of business.
1 boat in 2 years, 5 detainees on Nauru, closed down mainland detention centres all in the great year Howard took 13,000 refugees.
This isn't about 'fair share'.
This is purely about our government not sponsoring foreign criminal people smuggling gangs.
Our government is not in the business of supporting foreign or domestic criminals, so why start now.
And why shouldn't they make it hard for criminals to earn their filthy lucre preying on peoples misery for mere profit.
If the boats were stopped tomorrow, Australia would still accept 13,000 refugees and meet our international obligations.

thats hillarious...I think its the UN that makes the rules about asylum seekers.. and first peaceful country of entry..Howard didnt tell Indonesia it was their problem.these people are picking and choosing..do really desperate people do that?.. especially if they are muslim and already in a muslim country.I think you will find there is a much more sinister reason why they take these risks..and its mostly to do with money I will wager..

however I am sure you would agree with rudd when he suggested P&O stop by Xmas Island.. lol why not have them pick these people up in Singapore and be done with it..then all the paperwork can be done on the 8 days trip to our sunny shores.. where the welcome committee including.. adelcrow will be waiting to jobshare and homeshare with them.

it makes a lot of sense to me would save the country a heap no doubt about it.

Another lie, they cant stay in Indonesia.
We are the only country in this region to have promised to protect refugees; we signed the United Nations 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1967 Protocol. Both signed by LIBERAL PMs. But, that was in the days when Liberals still had morals.

You're right codswal.
This just highlights that they are not genuine refugees, just exploiting the ignorance of the Julia Gillard government.

Anybody left in any doubt that andrei is a contemptible human being?

Anyone?

Actually I think he has found the humour that is sorely needed in todays climate. Why do we all have to be soooo serious. I that's right. It's only funny if it is at the expense of the conservative side of politics. It's never funny if the left and its cause celebre are targeted.

Oh no phil.

Dont get me wrong.

I get it.

It took me a while to realise that andrei was just using that surreal british sense of humour that goes over the heads of a lot of people  ( including me in this case i'm embarrassed to say).

Monty Python would have been proud of the wit displayed by our friend andrei.

My mistake.

Yes . very very funny andrei.

very droll and witty.

I don't think he is any more contmptible than you or me.

And yet another boatload of illegal asylum seekers has been discovered.
And they will be transferred to the Death Zone, Christmas Island.

Yes they do arrive in monotonous regularity, and eventually another disaster will eventuate.
SO what will Julia Gillard's comment be when more people die?
And if this is also captured on camera!
What will be her response?
Will it be more of the burying the head in the sand and therefore what can't be seen doesn't exist?

Surely Julia Gillard knows that she is skating on thin ice.
And that the public saw through her flimsy excuse/attempt to try and blame the Navy for her own policy failures, so she can't blame the Navy.

That's "fantastic" news - "the more boats that come the better"!

You Libs must be soooooo pleased that you can squawk some more!

This whole boat people scenario is wearing a bit thin now.

The story kinda bores me a bit.

Just piss them all off, don't let any in and send 'em all back to whence they came.

They're pretty useless to anyone anyway.
