Enriching is subjective.

I am asking for a specific answer to a non-subjective question.

Either these people cost us money when they arrive or they do not.

Skilled migrants into Australia are not entitled to social welfare for 2 years. I have plenty of British mates living in Australia to know this.

Now these boat people. Do they cost us money or not????

Why so hard to answer??

Could it be (shock horror) some people dont like the answer?

Andrei, why on earth would you actually expect our government to collect data on that question? Equitist won't be able to answer you because our government doesn't actually like people finding out about that sort of thing. Best we all just be kept in the dark and nodding our heads to the "diversity is our greatest strength" mantra.

Hmmnnn....I wonder...what would an objective observer make of this thread - and the last several contributions in particular!?

Methinks they would find existing Aussies greatly in need of cultural enrichment - along with a good dose of humility and humanity...

That was just a weak copout of an answer, Equitist, and you know it.

I'm quite familiar with a lot of information on this question.  Just saying that they 'enrich us' doesn't make it so. They certainly don't enrich my life.

Yes and Yes Andrei.

And don't forget the free housing & accomodation, oh and medical etc.

They cost a lot of money.
And then they can bring in the rest of their family.

And listen to yourself. Your response reaks of liberal status asserting  and a sense of your own personal enlightment.. an 'objective' (frankly a bizarre statement since whether or not multiracial/multicultural immigrants 'enrich' us is fundamentally a subjective view point) observer in your view would see that Andrei and myself are in need of 'enriching'. Maybe some sensitivty training, perhaps? We don't fall lock step in with the liberal, multiculti multiracial zeitgeist! Silence us! Silence the heretics!

Your own statement attempts to paint us as literally defective.

Cultural enrichment????
Oh you must mean the ability to destroy boats, kill other fellow human beings, lose identification, how a 35 yearold can masquerade as a 17 year old, how a Pakistani can masquerade as an Afghanistani, the conspiracy and deliberately breaking our laws. Yes that sort of cultural enrichment. Well I guess Australia just does not want that sort here.

Oh, fer smack's sake - listen to yourselves...

Humans are subjective - it is intrinsic to our humanity...

Money is arbitrary - the senseless focus on cost is extrinsic and counter-productive to the betterment of humanity...

Everything doesn't boil down to simple black and white factors - especially not to monetary ones...

I never know whether to laugh or cry when one of those 'refugee advocates' pops up and says that boat people don't get any special treatment when it comes to housing.

So, where do they live once they're released from detention (or, 4 star motels, paid for by the taxpayer, of course) and granted residency here?

Because, I never hear of boat people doing it rough - living on the streets and in cars, etc. Unlike some of the tens of thousands of AUSTRALIANS who wait for years and years on ever increasing public housing waiting lists.
