Government backflip on speed camera locations

December 15, 2011

The State Government will no longer publish a weekly list of mobile speed camera locations, four months after the practice was criticised by the auditor-general.

The Government began publishing the locations online and in the Herald Sun newspaper at the start of the year,
fulfilling a key election promise
.

But an auditor-general's report in August found the publication was counter-productive and at odds with the road safety message.

The Herald Sun stopped its publication of camera locations shortly after the report was released and the Government has been reviewing the publication on the Department of Justice website.

The Coalition was highly critical of speed cameras while in opposition, claiming they were
"revenue raisers"
, but accepted the auditor-general's findings that they do help to reduce the road toll.

The Police Minister, Peter Ryan, says the Government has carefully considered the auditor-general's recommendations.

"Based on findings of the review and taking into consideration the auditor-general's recommendation, the Coalition Government has decided not to continue providing a weekly list of rostered mobile road safety camera locations," he said in a statement.

Opposition spokesman James Merlino says it is an
embarrassing backflip
for the Government.

"There's no doubt that the Government has to accept that this was a
dumb idea
," he said.

"This was never supported by Victoria Police, this was never supported by Victoria's road safety partners, this was always a
stupid policy
found out by the auditor-general and they've finally reversed their decision."

The Government has confirmed revenue from mobile speed camera fines dropped by 8 per cent in the eight months after motorists were warned where the cameras would be, although there was no increase in the number of accidents.

Police Minister Peter Ryan yesterday said the fall in revenue had nothing to do with his decision to ban the practice

Baillieu Government ignored festive taxi fix

December 13, 2011

A SECRET report calling for a massive boost to after-hours public transport over the Christmas party season has been ignored by the Baillieu Government.
The Herald Sun can reveal that public transport agency Metlink warned the Government in the report that more frequent overnight buses out of the city were needed to avoid widespread chaos.

But no extra services have been added.

Instead, the Government last night said it was still analysing demand for late-night weekend travel.

That will offer little comfort to the thousands of revellers who will be stranded in the city this Friday and Saturday.

Fears are mounting for this weekend, the busiest of the year for taxis except for New Year's Eve.

Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder has instead asked his officials to look at extending train services in future.

Metro said it was far too late to schedule extra services for this year, as it would require months of planning.

The Opposition's Fiona Richardson said Mr Mulder knew of the problem but had not acted.

"Perhaps if (he) dropped his chauffeur-driven ministerial car ... and opted for public transport, he might understand," she said.

One MORE bit of trivia ...

The "westie" was origianally red/orange, in colour
( ... many were shot, dead, mistaken for foxes)

His "Lordship" put out a directive to selectively breed, so that all the "clan" should be white

THIS is the "westie" we know and love today

Care to explain to us then Buzz -

1) Why Ted Baillieu is the "Preferred Premier" by 2/3rds of all Victorians?

2) Why the Labor Leader is polling 19% popularity?

Wait - is it all down the Federal party?

Because if I recall rightly you said Labor did well in Victoria federally because of "the excellent Brumby Government" (which by the way was then booted out on its backside).

Feel free to explain why this 'awful Premier' is preferred by so many Victorians.....(me included).

Now wind farm opponents have been handed victory on a plate. The Government’s new policy has three main elements:

the government will amend planning laws to give households power to veto wind turbines within two kilometres of their homes.

Turbines will also be banned in the Macedon and McHarg ranges, in the Yarra Valley, on the Mornington and Bellarine peninsulas, and within five kilometres of the Great Ocean Road and the Bass Coast.

And in changes that go further than the Coalition flagged in the policy it took to last year’s state election, turbines will also be prohibited within five kilometres of 21 Victorian regional centres.

Wind farms approved by Labor and not yet built will not be affected.

The Government claims that 92% of the state is still available for wind farm development, but the people who build them have a different view.

Pacific Hydro say that they will be pursuing opportunities elsewhere after completing current projects.

The Clean Energy Council estimated prior to the election that $3.6 billion worth of investments would not go ahead under the Coalition’s policy.

Make that up to $10 billion according to Giles Parkinson at Climate Spectator. Earlier Parkinson had written about the negativity coming from right-wing governments on climate change policy.[
b]

Barry O’Farrell is on record saying he doesn’t want any more wind farms built[/b]. The wind doesn’t blow so consistently in Queensland, so theoretically there should be opportunities in South Australia

New rules blamed for wind farm loss

September 01, 2011

A developer has scrapped plans for a wind farm project in south-west Victoria because of the State Government's new planning rules.

The company's managing director, David Shapiro, says it is now abandoning the development.

"The Victorian Government has changed the rules and as those rules stand now it simply wouldn't get through the planning framework," he said.

"Our reading of the situation is that really was the intention of Government to make development more difficult."

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-09-01/new-rules-blamed-for-wind-farm-loss/286583...

Mr Shapiro says the company is unlikely to launch new developments in Victoria.

The Planning Minister has said the new rules would not threaten investment in wind energy.

Mr "Planning" Minister ...
Investment is ALREADY leaving - in the BILLIONS

... to be welcomed with open arms, in South Australia - a state that BACKS investment in renewable, clean energy

I dropped by the Hepburn Wind site today, on the way to Melbourne, for Father's Day
I got out of the car, about 200 metres from the nearest turbine

I expected a gentle "hum" from this distance ...

What has the Baillieu government DONE or ACHIEVED in an ENTIRE YEAR that should warrant such a swing in its FAVOUR, since the 2010 state election ?

It has FAILED on almost ALL policy from returning cattle herds to national parks - through to YOUR favourite - INCREASING revenue from SPEED CAMERAS and ceasing the PUBLICATION of camera sites
