Coalition reaffirms Ballarat election pledges
BENJAMIN PREISS
17 Dec, 2010 12:51 AM

THE COALITION government has reaffirmed its commitment to its pre-election pledges in Ballarat even though Labor has retained the local seats.

In the lead-up to last month's state election the Coalition and its candidates made a raft of commitments to voters in the Ballarat East, Ballarat West and Ripon electorates.

The promises ranged from $38 million for the Western Link Road to more modest pledges such as $300,000 for the Creswick Bowling Club.

The Coalition's pre-election pitch also included $18 million for Sebastopol College, $2 million for a helipad at the Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital and a new fire station at Mt Helen.

Days before the election the Coalition also announced it would build two new police station in Ballarat North and Sebastopol.

Yesterday a government spokeswoman said the Coalition would deliver on all the promises it made before the November 27 poll.

"The Coalition is committed to implementing all its policies for the Grampians region and we look forward to working with the community and local organisations to achieve this," she said.

"A Baillieu Government is always prepared to listen to local communities and organisations and would welcome their approach if they believe they have a valid case for funding."

Former Ballarat East Liberal candidate Ben Taylor said the promises he'd made throughout the campaign would be carried out even though he had not been elected to parliament.

"It's bitter-sweet for me in a sense because I'm not actually elected and all the things that were promised is what will be delivered," he said.

"We came up with a lot of them as a priority for the area."

La Trobe University politics lecturer Ian Tulloch said now that Premier Ted Baillieu's government controls both houses of parliament there should be no excuses for failing to deliver on pre-election commitments.

Mr Tulloch said keeping election promises would be crucial to the Coalition's re-election prospects in 2014.

"If he (Ted Baillieu) wants to win any seats in Bendigo and Ballarat he has to fulfill those promises," he said.

It's true!
You get so used to the low speeds in Australia without thinking.

Without fail on coming from Australia and driving out of Heathrow onto the M4, the first 20 mins consists of everything bombing past me and even massive trucks getting frustrated with my 70 mph speed.

Despite being a good 10 km/hr faster than the speed limits in Aus, everyone still does another 15-20 km/hr on top of that.

Usually takes me half hour to acclimatise back to more normal speeds.

I was always told you drive to the conditions and your ability (with the obvious exception of built up areas, I never speed in them).

You get on open roads in the plains where there isnt sight nor sound of anyone, clear day and good road it is very easy to drive at a crusing speed of 140kms.

I have been on race tracks where speeds have reached 215 to 220kms and you find that things like grip into corners is actually better.

The problem in Australia is driver education, not speed.  Ive seen it so many times where people enter a corner at a speed quicker than they are comfortable with, and the first thing they do is brake hard.  You immediatley lose your grip, the weight transfers to the front of the vehicle and steering becomes 3 times heavier and the back loses stability.  With education people would know the better option is to accelerate.  It moves the momentum to the back and makes the steering lighter and more controllable and grip to the road is far more improved.  The accelleration also reduces the body roll.  Thats why the professional drivers all brake hard before the corners then accelerate through them.

Simple things like teaching people to accelerate through corners and not be braking, and to never enter a corner faster than what you exit it.

Education, real education will save lives.

If they couldn't then they should stay in the slow lane.
I once owned a motorbike that could just cruise all day at 160 km/hr.
The engine was only idling & it just purred.
It was actually more stable than any car I've driven at those speeds.

Double trouble if drivers don't cut road death toll
Reid Sexton
December 18, 2010

VICTORIA Police will consider introducing double demerit points for drivers if the state posts another high road toll over the Christmas holidays.

Victoria's top traffic cop, Deputy Commissioner Ken Lay, has warned that police will consider new measures available to them if the recent trend of speed and alcohol fuelling a spike in holiday deaths continues.

Forty-seven people have been killed on Victorian roads over the past three Christmas breaks, more than any other state or territory.

While Victoria has one of the lowest death rates per kilometres driven of any jurisdiction in the world and is regarded as having the safest roads in Australia, the Christmas break is a challenging time for police.

Don't miss the oppotunity, Ted
Put the "kybosh" on this one

Or like the "two armed police officers for every railway station" - will you hand it back to one who knows best, being the Victorian Police Commissioner ?

VICTORIA'S new Coalition government has conceded it will struggle to deliver a ''road map'' for the state's water and sustainability future within 100 days of winning office, in what looms as its first broken promise.

Lord Baillieu was not involved
His policy is to give law breakers the upper hand over speed cameras
THIS strategyis the work of the Victorian Police Force

Its a question of road, car and driver. the cars can easily do it. a lot of roads can and learning to drive at speed is not that hard. it is just that few people ever do.

I agree with Longweekend!
2 & 3 lane upgraded highways would be needed.
We would need smarter drivers though.
Trucks & old people with hats on would need to stick to the left hand slow lane.
Also - some smalller cars would burn their engines out at 140 km/hr.

Look at motorbikes available today.
Some have over 140 bhp at the rear wheel -
what a waste of money on our slow roads.

Longweekend's car could probably cruise at 200 km/hr all day
without straining the engine.

So there's no broken promise, you're just making a prediction then.
Where is the promise for it to be delivered within exactly 100 days?
So is it a broken promise if it's delivered in 101 days?

Now, remember that Kevin Rudd promised in 2007 about making it cheaper and easier to switch between financil institutions - that wasn't delivered was it.
At least Ted hasn't failed to deliver.
