Victoria's ambulance crisis set to worsen
January 01, 2011

THE state's ambulance crisis is set to worsen with Ambulance Victoria slashing its graduate program.
The 10 per cent graduate recruitment cut means 25 fewer paramedics on our roads - caused by a lack of money.

While 90 students took part in the program last year, students were told this week the program had been withdrawn.

Shadow health spokesman Gavin Jennings savaged the cuts.

"Ted Baillieu was good at criticising our ambulance service, but it's time he explains to Victorians how he will improve the system. He has no excuses, he must deliver his ambulance commitments in full and on time," Mr Jennings said.

Ted's "rock and a hard place"

Provisional 2010 road toll data released
Saturday, 01 January 2011

Victoria recorded 291 deaths on the state’s roads in 2010, the second lowest provisional road toll since records began in 1952.

http://www.vicpolicenews.com.au/more-news/5859-provisional-2010-road-toll-data-r...

A bit of a
"roaring silence"
from Ted, since the announcement of 2010's road toll ?

Not to mention the echoes from his supporters

Should he admit to the facts and figures - or stick to his election policy ?

Will Lord Baillieu take sound advise from "the coalfront" - and admit that the figures don't lie ?

Or further embrace the populist ticket he was elected on ?

National holiday road toll rises to 46
From: AAP January 03, 2011 8:03PM

THE deaths of a female pedestrian in South Australia and of a young male driver on the south coast of New South Wales today have taken the national road toll to 46.

The woman who died today after being hit by a car at Glendambo in South Australia's far north is the first fatality on South Australia's roads this Christmas-New Year holiday period.

In NSW the death of a young man when his car ran off the road and rolled at Kiama has taken the state's toll to 10.

Around the country the highest road toll is in Victoria with 16 deaths.

In Queensland 12 people have died while three people have died in both the Northern Territory and Western Australia while Tasmania has recorded one fatality. Only the ACT remained fatality free.

Responsible driving saves lives -  and I don't need large technicolour print to say that.  It's a fact.

Taking your eyes off the road to look for cameras is a recipe for death.

A SPIKE is the technical term
You could find a spot in the year when ANY state has the highest road toll

On an annual, national average ...
Victoria has proven the effectiveness of speed cameras
The Victorian Police Force agree

Big picture solutions.

Focus on 98% of road crash fatalities rather than just 2%.

It does not take huge intelligence to realise that focusing on the area where 98% of fatalities occur will save more lives than focusing almost totally on the area where not even 2% of fatalities occur.

The single greatest way to save lives on our roads is for those responsible for road safety to change their focus from solely catching drivers or riders breaking the speed limit to focusing on preventing the fatalities that occur below the speed limit.

It requires a total re-think and letting go of the obsession with speed and the miss-perception that speed kills. It does not - collisions kill.

Spend the money to build new roads.

Build new roads and re-engineer existing dangerous roads. The governments have the money. Around half the cost of every litre of fuel goes in taxes to be spent on roads - $10 billion. Only $2 billion is spent.

The State Governments receive the GST on fuel plus they install speed cameras 5 kilometres away from the so-called black spots that they or the Federal Government should have fixed.

Solution number nine - remove government greed.
The state governments are double dipping. They collect fines as well as take away drivers licence points for traffic infringements. Remove the incentive for state governments to generate income from setting and policing road rules.

Retain the loss of points system which road users fear the most but apply only a flat administration fee per infringement.

Do not allow commissions on money generated from speed camera fines to private enterprise as in Victoria.

REPOST ...

buzzanddidj wrote on Jan 3rd, 2011 at 11:41am:
IMAGINE the uproar if almost 300 people died and 6000 were seriously injured in street violence.

No politician would dare suggest greater leniency in applying the law.

Yet these figures represent Victoria's road toll in a year in which a new government came to power suggesting
more leniency for speeding drivers.
During the election campaign, Coalition leader Ted Baillieu said most people thought speed cameras were revenue-raisers. The Coalition attitude was strangely
at odds with its ''zero tolerance'' law-and-order platform.

No encouragement should be given to drivers who somehow feel entitled to bend rules that are in place to protect all road users.
Drivers who resent vigilant policing and speed and red-light cameras should try justifying their attitude to families whose loved ones were killed or maimed because of risky driving.
No one should pander to such populist idiocy.

No need to re-post.

It wasn't interesting the first time, let alone the second.

This is just a long tantrum because the Labor party were (quite rightly) booted out on its ear because of its performance and arrogance.

Can I quote the blog following the Vic election -

"And as Brumby went on about his achievements, his time in office, thanked his staff and talked of pride. I could almost hear thousands of people watching resonate 'what about Myki John?', 'what about Myki John?', 'what about Myki John?' It is maybe this arrogance, this failure to admit where they have been wrong that was John Brumby's undoing more than anything"

I reposted because it was obvious that buzz had not read the data about the UK proof about speed cameras in the first link in my post, and he obviously didn't read any of the the material (which I thought was interesting)  in the road sense site.
I don't want to be killed on the roads,  if I thought speed cameras would help prevent that, Iwouldn't knock them.

In the UK we use speed cameras correctly.

They are put at hot-spots, there are signs denoting your speed will be checked and they are painted clearly so you see them.

Where we want to ensure you slow down over a longer period we have average point to point cameras on the motorways - usually around roadworks to get you down from the 80mph+ most of us travel at to 50mph.

It works too.

None of my visiting UK friends can get over how the police in Victoria hide behind trees and signposts to catch unsuspecting motorists.

It is quite embarrassing to be from Victoria sometimes.
