The spectacular and distinctive Australian Alps contain landforms created by glaciers, remarkable fish fossils and unique cold climate plants and animals. The Alps have a strong association with Australia's pioneering history, while the snowfields and national parks have long been popular recreation areas.
The Australian Alps, made up of eleven national parks and nature reserves, were included on the National Heritage List on 7 November 2008.

http://www.environment.gov.au/heritage/places/national/australian-alps/index.htm...

The National Heritage List is a list of places with outstanding heritage value to our nation, including places overseas. These places are protected under the Australian Government's national environment law — the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

This piece of legislation - passed since beef industry access was removed - places control of the Alpine National Park firmly under the control of the Federal Government

There will, no doubt, be legal action forthcoming by the Federal Department of Sustainability and Environment

CATTLE grazing has controversially returned to the Alpine National Park, under the banner of
scientific research
,
after a five-year ban.

Cattle yesterday began to trickle back into the park as part of a six-year study to assess the effectiveness of grazing on reducing bushfire risk in Victoria's high country.

About 400 head have been introduced to six sites over 25,600 hectares (3.9 per cent of the park) until the end of the grazing season on April 30.

Grazing was banned from the park in 2005 after a parliamentary taskforce recommended at least a 10-year hiatus to allow native flora to regenerate following the 2003 bushfires.

The National Parks Association is outraged by the return of the cattle, and the potential for full-blown grazing.

''The state government's highly secretive return of cattle grazing to the Alpine National Park is the terrestrial version of Japan's scientific whaling,'' spokesman Phil Ingamells said.

''The operation has taken place under a level of secrecy that is quite extraordinary, and appears designed to avoid their clear responsibilities to refer the proposal to the federal government,'' he said.

The Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment has written to Mr Burke's office advising it of the trial and has offered a full briefing, but it has received no reply.

But the federal Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities has not received the letter.

It was still a promise he took to the people, and the people still voted in the coalition.

I think its a good call.  He has followed through on what he said he would on the matter.

If he reversed his decision Buzz, you would have been slamming him for it.

Not at ALL

He should NEVER have pandered to the beef industry in the FIRST place - over attempting the trade off of a national icon that belongs to ALL Australians

He KNOWS a return to a full scale cow paddock is beyond his jurisdiction
But he CAN allow limited damage by 400 cloven-hoofed animals in the name of "scientific research"* without a full, commercial return

This symbolic gesture will no doubt appease the "Man from Snowy River" wannabes - for a time - who feel a "win"

Sounds familiar ?

Regardless of your opinion, it was still taken to the voters, and the people put him in power to fulfill his promises.

He has done that.

...

Not really

He is not in a position to resume
commercial cattle grazing
- the parks now under the jurisdiction of the
Federal Government

But he CAN attempt to bypass this under the guise of the
"scientific" loop-hole
- with a limit on numbers

I daresay the federal minister will be looking into this when more pressing matters in Queensland are dealt with

You dont see me putting up ten posts a day in large font complaining about Gillards broken promises AND Gillards promises that she is keeping. you sound literally like a whiny old spinster. The credibility you once had as a decent and thinking opponent has long since evaporated and you are numbered along with the likes of Green_snot.

I consider Gillards govt morally illegitimate. But i dont complain ten times a day about it endless repeating the same boring song and dance.

Grow up.
