Montessori is a secular education system, exactly like the public education sector.  This means that no particular religion is taught as part of the curriculum, but that all religions, and all peoples are respected.  Respect is a key component in a Montessori classroom - respect for the child, respect for the environment, respect for others and respect for oneself.

Religion is looked at from a cultural and sociological point of view.  Children are invited to explore the cultures throughout the world and can see that there are many different religions.

Many Montessori schools celebrate holidays, such as Christmas, Hanukah, and Chinese New Year, which are religious in origin, but they are experienced on a cultural level as special days of family feasting, merriment, and wonder.

Montessori schools are independently owned/operated.  As such, it is up to the individual school/centre to determine its own policies regarding holiday practices.

While Montessori does not teach religion, we do present the great moral and spiritual themes, such as love, kindness, joy, and confidence in the fundamental goodness of life in simple ways that encourage the child to begin the journey toward being fully alive and fully human.

There are approximately 25,000 Montessori schools throughout the world located in over 120 countries in a wide range of cultural and socio economic settings.
Montessori is a method of education and as such can be implemented in a variety of educational settings including public schools, independent schools, religious schools, preschools and long day care centres.

Well the lefties didn't believe it when schools would impose bans on Christmas celebrations, then guess they will be denying this.

Saint Nick sacked from Victorian pre-school so not to offend religious groups

More importantly it will be interesting to see what Ted does about it!

Well Bracks tried something similar when some schools, kindies, community groups were banning Christmas.
Guess the lefties have forgotten about that.
Maybe Ted won't be a failure like Bracks was (7/11/06).

"The memo was sent to principals and school councils on October 24. Premier Steve Bracks last year encouraged schools to celebrate Christmas after some schools banned it for fear of offending non-Christian children.

A school in the outer northern suburbs was accused two years ago of taking Christmas out of festive celebrations.

Parents complained that the school had banned carols, saying "Merry Christmas" and even placed restrictions on festive wrap.

But the school denied the ban, saying their concert was focused on student work rather than the festive season. Kindergartens and childcare centres have also previously not allowed Santa in."

If you scroll back, you will see it was I that pointed out Teddy's C&P from Bracks' press release - 5 odd years previous

I have to wonder why the left is so agitated by Baillieu's actions ?
How does this hurt their Australia hating agenda?

"Actions" ?

The only "actions" I have seen, so far, is the wholesale dropping and "modifying on consultation" of election policy

Aside from repeating Steve Bracks' "Christmas pledge", what "actions" do you refer to ?

The lefties are a weird mob aussie.
They initially claimed that no schools were banning Christmas.
That was proved wrong and again it has been.
Then they claim excuses.
No, the issue is banning Christmas.
Pretty simple or you'd think so.
The lefties always twist themselves up in knots.

But when Bracks failed to act when schools were banning Christmas Ted says he will act.
Will need to see if he will now.

Pity it's not a subject of on line betting

Do you think he can create legislation that forces a PRIVATE pre-school to  employ a Santa* and wrap the school in tinsel* ?

Do you think he'd BOTHER ?

Or a STATE education institution, for that matter

(*Neither of which have ANYTHING to do with the Christian festival)

And yet it was applauded when Bracks adopted this.

As said earlier, lefties really are a weird mob.

We preferred the ORIGINAL over the C&P

Yes the lefties had a selective memory lapse when they immediately went into the denial stage.

Oh it's a bit like the doll and bear shop having to take their Mammy dolls off display because a certain American talk show host might be offended.

A MELBOURNE doll shop has withdrawn a golliwog from its display to avoid offending the Oprah Winfrey roadshow.

The store removed the "Mammy" dolls after a visit by Oprah's production company.

But the Dafel Dolls and Bears shop in Block Arcade - where 110 of Oprah's guests will attend a cocktail party tomorrow night - will continue to display other golliwogs.

Golliwogs are deeply offensive to Americans because of their perceived links to slavery and racism.

The store owner declined to comment because she had signed a confidentiality agreement with Harpo productions, but confirmed a meeting had taken place.

"Oprah's people came ... and yes it was discussed," a source familiar with the agreement told the Herald Sun.

"As a result, they won't have that particular doll on display. But there will be plenty of other gollies when they come through."

The golliwogs still on display at Dafel's have an explanatory note on the origins of the black dolls, a throwback to the toys enjoyed by Egyptian children when British troops occupied the country in the late 1800s.

Dafel's has sold dolls and toys, including golliwogs, in the Block Arcade since 1945.

Last year Australia faced international condemnation when American singer Harry Connick Jr expressed his shock at Hey Hey It's Saturday for broadcasting a minstrel sketch and asking him to judge the performance.

UK publishing company Macdonalds, which put out the Noddy books featuring a gang of golliwogs, decided in 1987 the dolls were racially derogatory.

But golliwog defenders say they have nothing to do with racism and are seen by children as just bright and friendly dolls.

They are for children in Australia. And the shop is in Australia.

Oprah should just leave her racist baggage on the shores of the USA.

Hope all the other toy shops around Australia also withdrew their Barbie dolls for the demeaning projectioning of women.
And withdrawal their GI Joe dolls for the violent depiction of men.

I hope Teddy - as well as making Christmas pantomines mandatory - will also legislate on golliwogs in toyshop windows, after the Bracks/Brumby Government had them banned
