A LEOPARD attacked seven people and sparked mass panic during an eight-hour rampage through an Indian town.

The big cat strayed into Karad,  160km from Pune, and was first spotted on the roof of a house Sunday afternoon, the Mumbai Mirror reported.

As residents rushed out to look, the animal - believed to be terrified by the commotion - fled into an empty house.

Some people threw rocks inside, causing the furious animal to charge out and cause mayhem in the town.

As residents fled in terror, the leopard attacked and wounded seven of them - pinning its last victim down before a policeman fatally shot it at close range with a revolver.

Earlier attempts by police to drive it off with sticks and stones had failed.

A wildlife biologist told the Mumbai Mirror the animal would have attacked because it was scared by the humans.

"If a leopard strays into human territory its first instinct is to find a place to hide," Vidya Athreya said.

"However, what happens usually is that a mob gathers around the animal and attacks it. This provokes the animal, which attacks in self-defence."

Ah...the circle of life, animal strays to close to humans, animal realises its mistake and hides, people find animal and harrass it, animal gets ticked off and attacks a human, animal gets shot, eventual species extinction, humans screw up the delicate balance of nature, human extinction  Smiley

Holy sh!t Batman, run for the hills?
Er, No, that's where the leopard is?

Ok, run for the water, leopards don't like water?
Er, No, the Rivers are Flooding!

Ok, let's all head for the idylic Bahamas?
Er, definately NOT, that's where Baha (now whatfor me) now says he hangs out and that would be a fate worse than being eaten by the leopard OR drowning in the flood?

I remember back in the late 90's on a mine site in Tanzania where leopards were a problem. The locals say that you can walk past a leopard - just keep your hands hidden. They say that if they see your hands, they will attack. We had a security guard standing watch over a storage compound overnight. In the morning, he was inside the compound. He decided that it would be safer when a leopard started creeping towards him in the middle of the night. I just saw the paw prints unfortunately.
