Gardening tip: fruit fly control
Feb 12th, 2011 at 10:40am

Where I am in NSw the next few weeks will be the worst for fruit fly. They've been getting steadily more active over recent weeks.
Here's a good control method which costs next to nothing.
1. Take a 2l orange juce bottle
2. Drill 3 holes at least 1cm diameter, one on each side about
half way up
3. Leave a little orange juice in it, add a teaspoon of sugar and
a little bit of yeast
4. Hang it among your tomatoes or whatever else the frut fly attacks
5. Empty out the dead fruit fly every couple of days or so and start again

You'll need 1 bottle to say every six tomato plants. Beats spraying.
If anyone knows how to move this to the gardening section be my guest.

Would a black sandwich spread suffice for the yeast component - or maybe beer - or do you suggest buying concentrated/powdered yeast at the supermarket?

Lamenting the shift in the Australian psyche, away from the egalitarian ideal of the fair-go - and the rise of short-sighted pollies, who worship the 'Growth Fairy' and seek to divide and conquer!

I use the dry yeast you buy in packets of 6 or 12 sachets. Good for making pizzas & bread too.

PS you leave about an inch (2 cms?) of juice in the bottle and use say half a tsp of yeast,

Good tip.  I've also heard of people adding sugar to beer in a jar and burying it so that the neck is at ground level. That works for snails too.

We've had a lot of fungus in these parts following the high rainfall. For fungus (not recommended for food crops  Wink ) add half a teaspoon of Bordeaux (Copper Oxychloride) to 500mls of water, one or two drops of dishwashing detergent and about 200mls of urine. Spray the affected foliage twice a day until the fungus is gone.

nemesis, the better half of me says you can leave it about a week without changing it, but me I like to be tidy. A tidy fruit fly trap, a tidy mind.

muso, I went into a nursery once to ask for bordeaux and they didn't know what I was talking about. Nurseries can be bad sources of information. I find bordeaux sprays very difficult - you have to keep cleaning out the spray nozzle.

I have this fantastic recipe...it's made out of lux soap flakes and I think chilly seeds, it's in my organic gardening book, do you want me to go find it?

It will give me something to do in between being hacked by online brats.
