Absolutely.

Shocking and frightening.

I read a report today of an eyewitness account of the tsunami taking away a group of primary school students.

Over 100 little kids being overtaken and destroyed by this disaster as they were being led by their teachers to a "safer" place after the initial quake. The tsunami defences were set up to protect against a 5 meter wave (the expected maximum).

The wave was MUCH higher than that.

Today at school we had an aftershock and all my students immediately ducked under their desks as they are trained to do and the class leader immediately went to open the door.

Never seen them actually follow the instructions so closely after previous earthquakes here. Previous earthquakes had resulted in smiles and excitement.

Not anymore.

And on a MUCH sadder note , I saw this clip on another site and to read some of the comments made by some people makes me wonder as to the humanity and mental state of people.

Absolutely shocking to realise there are some people in this world who I would not piss on if they were on fire.

I never understood the destructive power of tsunamis, and despite being a surfer who had ridden extremely large waves, and was familiar with the impact of 20 foot plus waves, when surfing, my concept of a tsunami was vastly different to the reality we saw in that clip.
I always imagined my water knowledge would allow me to "ride" some debris to survive such an event, but this inexorable wall of water pushing debris at you is far beyond any horror I had imagined.
Our hearts go out to these poor people and the best we can do is to just try and support any survivors, as best we can.
That was sad, and horrible to watch, they must have been so scared.

That was both amazing and shocking. Shows that when nature take charge there is very little we can do about it. I too thought that one may be able to 'ride' the wave front, but this shows how foolish that notion is. It was more a solid wall of debris than water. Well done to those people who went back down the hill to try and save others.

I think the Nipponese are an over-populated act of stupidity with limited gene-pool variation that 'reflects', much like the moon reflects sunlight, nothing more than another nation's 'cultural' originality.

Not only that, they are in the Top 5 of worst polluters/destroyers of the Ocean - no wonder they copped a hammering. Kinda ironic Huh

Nippon's treatment of the environment is possible cause (more possible than other nations who don't deserve the word 'possible' even remotely attached to their identity) for what happened to itself.
