Auto-Electricians 'can be' twice to thrice as much as a conventional Mechanic.
Then you'll have to face the fact that not many Auto-Electricians will be up to scratch with these Electrical Cars for at least 10 years, so it will be like the Plasma TV scenario - where you had to do a costly return to Nippon or something ...or just buy a new one, which is what they want as well.
Hence why Plasmas are all watching the pavements these days.

the car doesnt become available un the US until 2013 and probably not here until a year later.

call me when there are actual EVs around to buy and drive. until then we might as well be discussing personal jet packs.

yes but what is likely to go wrong with them ? There is a just a motor, set of batteries and a motor controller with sophisticated diagnostic software on board. No need to pay an unqualified auto electrician for anything. There is just no maintenance on these types of cars Wink

yeh you are really hoping for that aren't you. The Nissan Leaf is already selling in the US so you can't do anything about it.

Just stick to Holden's Green Cruze car fully imported from Korea and $1.60 per liter of clean green fossil fool. That's your sort of Green car isn't it. All 200 million dollars worth of it Sad

thus speaks someone who has obviously never owned a car. steering, brakes, transmissions (yes EVs still have them), air con, safety features, chassis, and yes BATTERIES AND MOTORS. no one is sayng EVs wont have less mainteance than ICEs but to say they ahve no maintenance is just foolish.

I've saved a motza over the years because I am
a competent mechanic, so do all my own
repairs/servicing.

Apart from the electric motor & batteries, I can't
see why I couldn't continue to do the same.

Servicing/running costs wold be minimal.

haven't you heard of electric power steering (already being used on some vehicles) and regenerative braking which drastically reduces brake wear ?

and the other following benefits which cost ICE owners $$$$$

just face it badweekend, the days of ripping people off on oil changes is a thing of the past with EV's Wink

- No ripoff petrol
- No getting ripped off on service and maintenance
- No oil changes
- No oil filter
- No filthy carcinogenic sump oil to dispose of
- No transmission to pack up and maintain
- No spark plugs to change
- No timing belt to change
- No fuel filter to change
- No radiator and hoses to change
- No fuel injectors to pack up
- No problems with contaminated fuel
- No exhaust pipe to change
- No toxic tail pipe emissions
- No green house gas emissions
- No catalytic converter
- Create your own energy at home using your own rooftop PV array
- Silent operation
- No wars fort over oil
- No environmentally damaging oil spills
- regenerative braking recovers lost energy when braking
- reduction in brake maintenance due to regenerative braking

I think Nail you will be suprised the number of families going to bigger cars like the Captiva, Territory, Kia Carnivals etc due to the requirements of car seats for kids up to now age 7 (from memory).

The Falcon and commodores are no longer any good for the 2.3 kid family as you struggle to fit three car seats in them.

But you already knew that was a major factor in the depleation of the key target market didnt you.

Some greenie protestor this morning hit me on the head with a placard at the BP Shareholder meeting!!!

What is it with these people and their need to behave like this??

It was more likely to be a fisherman who has had his business and life destroyed by BP pumping oil into the Gulf than a feral Greenie  Smiley

The poor quality of Aussie built cars is common knowledge these days so it is no wonder people are flocking to buy Japanese and Western European built cars.
Holdens answer to the small car market is to import a 3rd rate piece of junk from Korea in pieces and build it here..what a joke.
As for Ford, you may as well tear up your money and flush it down the dunny.
The only problem with buying Japanese cars at the moment is the long wait because of the disasters that have befallen the country but I would rather wait 3 mths for a new Japanese car than waste my money on an Aussie built piece of junk that I can have in a day.
My opinion on the Aussie car industry is..good riddence to bad rubbish  Smiley

The only sector propping up Holden and Ford is the government fleet market..without the tax payers these American companies would quickly fold in this country.
It would be far cheaper to retrain the workers in new 21st century industries than continuing to support these American companies in churning out junk cars that are decades behind the rest of the world.

Territories were one of the cars that Ford is making less of along with the falcon.

and crappy taxies for which these cars are not designed for. A proper taxi design is the one the poms use. Why don't Ford and GMH make those ??
