A third wild brawl involving young Sudanese men has broken out in Melbourne in as many nights, leaving one man unconscious and another with stab wounds to his head from a broken bottle.
Detectives are investigating whether last night’s violence in Ringwood is linked to two other drunken brawls this week, in which one man was attacked with a machete and bike chain, following a Sudanese beauty pageant at the weekend.
In the latest violence, police were called to the carpark of Daisey’s Hotel on Mount Dandenong Road at 10.30pm where a group of up to 30 African men, all believed to be drunk, were brawling.
When police arrived the group ran to nearby Ringwood Lake Park where the clash continued.
During the fight, a 19-year-old Balwyn man was bashed unconscious while a 20-year-old South Australian man was hit with a bottle and suffered head injuries, along with cuts to his legs and hand.
Both men were taken to Maroondah Hospital.
A 20-year-old Bayswater man also suffered cuts to his upper body but did not require hospital treatment.
Police say a number of the men were from interstate and had travelled to Melbourne to attend the Miss South Sudan Australia beauty pageant, held on Saturday night.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said paramedics were called to the hotel carpark to treat a 19-year-old, however when they arrived the teenager refused treatment.
An hour later paramedics were called to a nearby park where the same person had reportedly been bashed unconscious.
He was conscious when paramedics arrived, and was suffering bruising and swelling to his face and a leg injury.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said those involved in the fight ‘‘appeared to have been alcohol-affected and have been un cooperative with police’’.
‘‘No arrests have been made at this stage and detectives are yet to ascertain a motive for the affray.’’
The weekend of violence started in Clayton at Sunday night’s after-party for the annual Miss South Sudan pageant.
During that clash a divisional van was badly damaged after being pelted with rocks and bottles.
In a separate incident at 1.40am yesterday, police were called to a fight between two small groups in Braybrook and were set upon by as many as 100 people who had been drinking in Pennell Reserve, Burke Street.
One officer was punched in the face and another was hit in the head with a bottle before the pair retreated and called for help.
Anyone with information about the brawls has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
