THE Federal Government says its indigenous housing program in the Northern Territory exceeded building and employment targets during 2010.
Almost
in remote communities now have improved housing, with
built and
1023 rebuilds and refurbishments
completed under the
Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Program.
The program has also exceeded its employment target.
The program also aimed to employ indigenous people at a rate of one in five.
The rate achieved was closer to one in three.
Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin, in releasing the figures on Monday, said the Government was rolling out new houses, rebuilds and refurbishments in the NT as quickly as possible. "Getting housing right is critical to closing the gap on indigenous disadvantage," she said in a statement.
The Government's commitment to the program is 750 new houses, 230 rebuilds and 2500 refurbishments, she said
