Agree.
Why is it my friends from the UK have to wait a period of 6 months to have their documents checked, police reports filled out, HIV tests, interviews at Australia house.

They are your friends. That's the problem. We deported you, you think we want any of your associates here too?

they are the rules. you want to come to this country then you stand in line. it is that simple.

Do you physically stand, do you? For how long?  Under all circumstances? What if your life was threatened in a detention centre? What if you were malnourished? What if your kids were mistreated? Too bad? You have to stand in the imaginary line?

I know you don't have the mindset because you live in a well developed country and have been bred to become rather narrow minded in your views.  So it's ok.

your bleeding heart approach is no solution to the problem because there are 50million who want to settle here. and they cant for reasons that even you shoudl understand. there are limits and one of those limits is that you stand in line. and surely being a russian you woudl understand STANDING IN LINE.

50 Million? Where did you get that figure? Talk about fear.

My point stands - placing a smokescreen in front of the problem doesn't solve it either.

Howard policies didn't stop people smuggling.  Howard policies simply had people smuggling transfer to other destinations, and ensured that people remained in detention centres in such conditions that all the right are now crying about with regard to Malaysia.

And I'd like to see evidence of your claim Australia is the number one destination for refugees. Seriously, I haven't seen it.

a) No but they do send to the USA and Canada, which as you would hopefully realise, are much longer times at sea, in much harsher waters.

The fact remains that many people who get on boats are escapees from detention centres in Indonesia. So instead of targetting the issue of ill-treatment of refugees, Howard just wanted to play them as political pawns.  Which, he successfully did.

b) Evidence, please!

Reminds me of the quote from the Polish President.

"Are you concerned at the exodus of Poles to the UK and Germany?"

"Not really. The people who leave are the sh*t Poles anyway so we're much better off without them. Let the English and Germans have them"

Grin

Mind you, this was the same guy who demanded Poland get some of Germany's votes at the EU meetings because the Germans murdered Poles in WWII.

I'm happy we deported you Smiley

"we"??

I have never been deported by Russia.

and now it starts...  Wait for the bun fight. If Gillard gives the Greens what they want she will have civil war in her party. If she doesnt the Greens will vote against the carbon tax and all this wil be for nothing - just liek they did with the ETS.
