The Wrong Message on the Carbon Tax
Jun 14th, 2011 at 1:46pm

The Gillard government has a severe issue with communication and its ability to sell its policies.

Take the Carbon Tax for example.  Now, what we know is that the vast majority of Australians understand that man made climate change is real.  Hence why the agenda from both parties has moved past the "science" and now we are debating the action to take.  The majority of people understand that direct action has been tried and failed. Yet, people still don't support the Carbon Tax? Why?

It has nothing to do with the fact that Gillard lied. It does however have to do with the fact that noone bothers listening to the government anymore because the messages are just so jagged. In this case, I am of the opinion that the government should not be selling the climate tax as the required mechanism to stop the "Greatest moral challenge of our time" but rather it is a sustainable living measure; sell the message just like the successful Target 150 campaign in Victoria for water consumption.  We know Climate Change is real, we know electricity prices are growing, and we know population is growing, and is inevitable that it continue to grow.  So, we know we have to start living in a more sustainable way, one way or another.  With this in mind, introduce the carbon tax to generate increased demand in the renewable sector and provide compensation to people so they have the incentive to reduce their energy and save money they get as a tax cut.

What do others think? Why is it that this government simply can't sell a message, or their advisors seem to always come up with longwinded frutile messages that never interest anyone, and if anything just frustrate the electorate?

It's not a matter of communication or inability to sell a sh1t sandwich.

It's a matter of trust and capability.
This govt has neither

Probably this one

Do you believe that man's activities are affecting the world's climate?Yes 67%
No 33%

Poll closes in 16 days

This is in today's SMH. I'd call a 67/33 split the vast majority also.

53% of Australian electors oppose the Gillard Government’s proposed carbon tax, 37% support the carbon tax legislation and 10% can’t say.

A clear majority of Australian electors (64%) say the proposed carbon tax will make no difference to the world’s climate compared to 31% that say it will.

has nothing to do whatsoever with whether people believe man made climate change is real or not, but just another example of how the communication has gone completely wrong.

Governments have proven time and time again they are terrible managers of money.

I dont see the benefit in giving them a cent more when they only blow what they have now.

This government also has a bad habit of releasing "policy" without bothering to talk to those that are a part of it.  It is more interested in its perception in the media than letting its policy speak for itself.

That, and Wayne Swan couldnt run a cake stall.

It could have something to do with some stuck up people thinking the debate is over, when in fact the people have not stopped debating it. Just because some elites think the debate is over, has nothing to do with the ordinary people. They will tell you when it is over, when you stop hearing them on radio and in the streets.

It could also be the fact Juliar lied to them.

Or maybe when the question is asked, when Juliar, do you think because we are reducing CO2, that the whole world will have a net reduction in CO2. Juliar responds with 'oh oh but it is about contributing' and never answeres the question for the people.

Juliar, in every concevable way, makes this CO2 carbon tax look shonky.

And yet the leader of the opposition is still in negative approval territory.  Just goes to show that the government is doing its own damage - not the opposition.
