How would you rate them out of 10? Also, what about Julie Bishop and Wayne Swan?

I'd give:

Abbott - 2/10.
Gillard - 0/10.
Bishop 2/10.
Swan - 0/10.

Careful, you'll have cods in here singing the praises of these alleged politicians.

The only use for ALL of our politicians is to load them onto a barge and tow it out to sea (about 20k) and let the Navy use the barge as target practice.

Australian politicians are filth.

Abbott is OK. He is a bit irritating with the lip smacking but otherwise he is OK. He has not been a climber-over so he is a bit of an unlikely guy in his current role or the next. But he is an honourable man and people know what he stands for and who he is.

He beats Rudd and Gillard in my book any time.

The Greens are useful idiots, as are the independents. You need them as gadflies.

Actually the whole problem of why he still has such a huge disapproval rating is because he isn't trusted and people DON'T know what he stands for.   His entire book had to be ripped apart once he became Opposition Leader, and since then who could ever forget his gaffe of admitting he only tells the gospel truth when it's written in front of him?  Not to mention that we don't have any policies out from him other than just opposition for opposition sake.   What's his vision for Australia? For there not to be a Labor government? Ok. What else?

Australian politics is completely dysfunctional. Expect to see some seismic shift n the not too distant future. Something HAS to give, sooner or later.

There's a lot of truth in what you are saying.
We need to remember, though, that Rudd only won because he was the non-Howard candidate.

The same is going to happen to Gillard. SHe will lose to Abbott (or Turnbull) simply because they will be the non-Rudd/non-Gillard candidates.
Funnily enough, after 4 years, non-ALP is just right.

Combet? Another ACTU prez for PM? I don't think so. Shorten? Another ACTU type who wasn't even prez? No.

My sentiments EXACTLY!

The politics of sideshow and lowest common denominator MUST be stopped - and pronto!

Look at the contenders: Gillard or Abbott

Some old moll who sounds like she just staggered out of the local beer garden after chucking back one too many schooners.

                       OR

Stuttering Stanley constantly running around in a mad panic sticking his tongue out like he’s about to catch a fly.

What must the rest of the world think of them and the Australian people for voting them into power.   LOL  LOL

She's from Melbourne. We don't normally have schooners at pubs... we have pints. Smiley

I didn't realise you did comedy Soren, that quote is priceless.

Do you really KNOW what Abbott stands for?
Because if you do you should drop him a line and fill him in, so he can then tell the rest of us.

Amazing....three pages and it seems that most are in agreement that our pollies suck, we are being ripped off by paying their exorbitant wages and "extras".

What can we do about this lack of political strength? We have to have a leader, so where do we get a good leader from?

Who knows? maybe this is how it will be from now on, political kindergarten, or at least until after the great depression, then we might get all sensible again.

I think that the consensus between left and right is actually a false one. I think the right hate Gillard because she's an ALP PM. While I've got nothing but contempt for her handling of refugees. As she said herself today, her policies on refugees actually make Howard look soft.

I support action on climate change, on that and the refugeee issue I see a lack of imagination, but a carbon tax seems a step further than anything the opposition is offering. The NBN is a good thing and quite courageous. On the other hand I think caving in to mining magnates was a criminal act of betrayal.

The country has a window of opportunityin which to show the rest of the world a vision of the future that is better. Where we might agree is that none of our politicians show they have any vision/imagination at all.

There has never been a good leader in all human history. Some have been lucky and others have not. That's as true of leaders of corporations as it is countries, but rather more obvious.

The evolutionary imperative is away from power centered on rulers and towards Democracy. What we need is a system that takes the next step which is to reverse the flow of power altogether.
