A Federal Labor MP says he will preference against the Greens in favour of the Liberals at the next election, if the Opposition does the same, to try and oust the only Greens MP from Parliament.

Michael Danby is the member for Melbourne Ports and says mainstream voters in his electorate do not like some of the Greens more extreme polices.

He says Greens MP Adam Bandt would not have won the seat of Melbourne from Labor if it were not for Liberal preferences.

"I support the Prime Minister in dealing with whatever the minority parties might support... but it doesn't mean that we're obliged to support them on all issues or to give them preferences," he said.

"I think its very important to call the Liberals to account in Melbourne, its their preferences that elected the Greens last time and if they do the right thing, Melbourne Ports will consider doing the right thing."

"I have some influence in Melbourne Ports and will be recommending on the basis of what happens in Melbourne, if the Liberals are going to preference against the Greens in Melbourne, we'll do the same in Melbourne Ports."

This is funny.

The Liberals preference the greens in this seat to stuff up Labor even though they are further away in policy then any other party.

The guy gets elected and ends up in the position of being able to force a carbon tax back on the agenda thanks to the Liberals support.

The Liberals go rabid and blame Labor for what they have done to themselves.

comical.

Good work by Adam for his motion condemning the Malaysian Solution!

Good also to see the Greens continuing to stick with their principles while the other parties continue their race to the bottom.

It is interesting to see the Liberals backing the motion, however.

Hopefully this will see a softening in their policy on Asylum seekers???

I am more inclined to see it as saying no just for the sake of it, sadly.

... and for those that were calling the greens hypocrites for supporting the Malaysian Solution?

Anyone?

Anyone?

What he is really saying is that he doesn't agree with Australia's voting system in the mandatory requirement of preferential voting.
The alternative is the donkey vote, aka vote greens!
