Apart from the monetary cost, what does it matter if we keep troops there?

They aren't conscripts and it's highly unlikely that their motivation to be there and fight is driven by any higher ideal like bringing democracy to Afghanistan or protecting Australia.

They are there to do what they signed up to and were trained for.... go to exotic places, get a buzz by being there.... and to fight.

Saying something like the war is pointless or unwinnable is a crap excuse to them.

Australian taxpayers don't pay for soldiers to have a good time killing foreigners... They train them and pay them to defend the Commonwealth.

Actually, I suspect that one of the reasons why our forces are in Afghanistan is to provide the younger 'generations' (cohorts) of recruits with live-action frontline experience and training...

Pity about all those civilians who must die for Australian adventurism... Adventurism granted to us by crawling up the arse of a superpower... Not much honour in that.

Agreed - as far as I can tell, nothing good nor honourable has come from our interference in the ME over the past decade!

Lamenting the shift in the Australian psyche, away from the egalitarian ideal of the fair-go - and the rise of short-sighted pollies, who worship the 'Growth Fairy' and seek to divide and conquer!

Another sad day for the ADF, I pretty much agree with Belgarion.
