A SENIOR official of the Victorian Liberal Party, businessman Andrew Abercrombie, has been implicated in a plan to spy on the business activities of an associate.
Leaked company documents reveal that Mr Abercrombie, the Liberals' Victorian branch treasurer, was party to a plan to dupe fellow businessman Brian Evans into releasing confidential information about his telco company, Digital River.
The plan involved falsely claiming to Mr Evans that the ANZ bank had requested a ''due diligence'' financial examination of his company for a potential purchaser.
In November 2009, Mr Abercrombie received an email from another businessman, Gary Tescher, stating ''we will advise Brian … I am acting for a potential purchaser of Digital River.
''This will give us 'free access' to all of the information we need and also will not alert Brian as to what we are up to,'' he wrote.
