The last person to split from the Libs to start a new party was Don Chip with the Democrats and once he retired they became a joke.
It was different. He labelled them badly for a start, as 'there to keep the bastards honest'. I for one, think there's enough disasatifaction around to take a credible new party over the line from the off.
I agree, Grey, things are different now - and not just politically...
The Liberal Party really is split right down the middle - there's those doGmatists from the religious right, who worship Abbott for his fighting win-at-all costs antics, and the more pragmatic and progressive moderates...
We also have the internet and the 24 hour news cycle - the latter of which, ironically, is what has given divisive and grandiose stunt-pullers like Abbott a platform...
That said, Malcolm Turnbull has already shown that he can withstand and deflect any punches that an intellectual and economic lightweight like Tony Abbott might throw his way...
Besides, Abbott is paranoid about Turnbull - for good reason - and perhaps to the point that he would seek to actively-undermine his pre-selection next time around...
What would happen, if Abbott forced Turnbull's hand - and the hands of his supporters!?
